Tigers vs. Guardians - Reese Olson vs. Slade Cecconi (7:10 PM, EST)

The Detroit Tigers have dominated the American League all season. Detroit is poised for a massive playoff run, and the primary reason for their success has been starting pitching. 

Players like Tarik Skubal have been fantastic this season, and receive most of the praise, but other starters have been solid on the mound. Reese Olson has been a catalyst for the team’s success, and he will take the ball on Thursday.

Olson is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He has allowed 38 hits in 48.2 innings with 51 strikeouts. He offers two great NRFI qualities in his arsenal.

Olson has been great with strikeouts and he also has kept the ball in the yard. This means he can get out of trouble with power pitches, and not blow a NRFI with a single mistake.

Slade Cecconi will throw for the Guardians, and he is the wild card in this contest. Cecconi is good enough to trust, but he must be flawless against the Tigers offense.

Cecconi is 3-3 with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He has allowed 41 hits, and averages one strikeout per inning.

The Guardians offense has been lackluster this season, so I like Olson’s matchup. I’m more concerned with Cecconi on the bump, but the matchup is good enough to take the NRFI for a solid price.

Red Sox vs. Nationals - Lucas Giolito vs. Mike Soroka (11:05 AM, EST)

The Boston Red Sox have one of the worst first inning ERAs from their starting pitching. However, their bats are very inconsistent, and they have one of their best arms throwing on the Fourth of July. 

Lucas Giolito has been fantastic lately, and he is much better on the road than at home. Giolito is 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. 

He doesn’t have elite strikeout ability, but he has kept the ball in the yard on the road by locating. Mike Soroka has been strong for the Nationals, and I expect him to shove in the first inning. 

He is 3-5 with a 4.7 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. The pitcher has struck out 64 batters in 59.1 innings this season. The early start time should throw the offenses off in this contest, which is the deciding factor in taking the NRFI.
