We knew the Brewers’ pitching was good, but their bats have outperformed expectations to begin the season. They rank in the top ten in the league in batting average, RBIs, home runs, stolen bases, and on-base percentage. A big reason for the success has been the stellar play of rookies Garrett Mitchell and Brice Turang. Both were top prospects for Milwaukee and have lived up to expectations at the plate.
The rookies are only part of Brewer’s offensive success, as newly acquired Brian Anderson and William Contreras have also outperformed expectations. Both have been reliable at the plate, and Anderson leads the team in RBIs. Milwaukee also has fellow newbie Jesse Winker back in the lineup after an injury. The former Mariner has done well in limited time this season but is still looking for that first home run. Considering how his tenure with Seattle ended, you can bet Winker will be swinging for the fences tomorrow.
The Brewers will turn to Eric Lauer (2-1, 5.28 ERA) to get the start tonight. While his ERA isn’t great, he is coming off an impressive win against the Padres. He went six innings, allowed just one run, and struck out six. Lauer’s ability to settle in early was the most promising sign of the win, as he has surrendered a run in the first inning of his previous two starts. The Mariners are loaded at the top of the order, primed and ready to take advantage of any first-inning hiccups.
I love the over because of how Brewer's offense has played. We mentioned the rookies and new signings, but they have also gotten a boost from the play of Rowdy Tellez. The first baseman has five home runs and 12 RBIs and has been a fantastic clean-up man. Even if some of these players are rested, the Brewers’ deep bench should provide plenty of power against Marco Gonzalez.
Seattle’s offense finally seems to be ready to break out. They struggled to score consistent score runs for much of the early season, but that changed in their sweep of the Rockies. They are getting solid contributions from across the lineup, helping them wear down opposing pitchers. Lauer has pitched well but has also shown he is vulnerable to big innings early. Expect to see Seattle jump on him early to jumpstart a high-scoring game.
Jarred Kelenic has been the biggest reason for Seattle’s success. The 23-year-old is seeing the ball as well as anyone in the league and has been a boost to the back of the lineup. Ty France has been hitting well, and Julio Rodriguez is starting to get hot. They should be able to do plenty of damage against Lauer and a tired Milwaukee bullpen.
Marco Gonzales (1-0, 4.22 ERA) will be getting the start for the Mariners tonight. The veteran starter has had just two appearances this season, both against the Guardians. His last start was his best, giving up one run over 5 ⅔ innings. The biggest issue has been dealing with his control. He has five walks and 12 hits over 10 ⅔ innings this season. While he was able to prevent them from becoming runs in his second start, he can’t afford to do that against a dangerous Milwaukee offense.
