For much of this Major League Baseball season, the Arizona Diamondbacks held the lead in the NL West. But the Los Angeles Dodgers took it over the summer and they have never looked back. On Tuesday night, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will square off in a game featuring two-star pitchers, in a game that features huge implications for both teams and their postseason prospects.
The Arizona Diamondbacks enter this game having lost two of their last three games, including their series opener against the LA Dodgers last night. Arizona has a slim lead for the final Wild Card spot in the National League, as they are up by a half-game over the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card race. Here, the Diamondbacks will look to one of their top pitchers to help them hold onto that position for another day.
Merrill Kelly has not quite been at the level of Zac Gallen for the Diamondbacks this season, but he has done a great job nonetheless. Kelly comes into this game with a record of 10-5 and an ERA of 2.97 in the 2023 season. He will need to continue to pitch at a high level in order for the Diamondbacks to avoid dropping out of their current postseason position entirely.
Arizona will also need to find a way to put up some runs against the Dodgers on Tuesday night, something they struggled with on Monday. Arizona only managed to score four runs in their loss to the Dodgers in their last outing. With Clayton Kershaw on the mound for this game, runs could once again be hard to come by, and the Diamondbacks will need to find a way to avoid that.
The Los Angeles Dodgers enter Tuesday on a two-game winning streak, having won their season finale against the Red Sox before winning on Monday against the Diamondbacks. Los Angeles has won seven of their last 10 games, and hold a commanding lead in the NL West standings. They have turned their attention to trying to unseat the Braves as the top team in the National League, which would mean home-field advantage in the postseason.
Los Angeles will look to Clayton Kershaw to help them get another win toward that goal on Tuesday night. Kershaw is 11-4 so far this season and has a very impressive ERA of 2.52 on the year. Against a Diamondbacks team that has struggled to compete with Los Angeles over the last month or so, Kershaw could give the Dodgers just the advantage that they need to create even more distance between themselves and the competition in the NL West.
Also worth monitoring going into this game is the individual play of Mookie Betts for the Dodgers. Betts has taken over the position of favorite in the race for the NL MVP award, as he has been on fire of late for the Dodgers. If he can continue that by playing well in this game, it would be good for both the Dodgers and for the prospects of Betts to win the biggest individual award in the sport.
