The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers have combined to hold first place in the NL West for the majority of this season. Coming into their matchup on Tuesday night, though, only the Dodgers have enjoyed recent success. In this contest, the Diamondbacks will look to snap an extending losing streak, while the Dodgers will aim to extend their advantage in the NL West by another game.
The Los Angeles Dodgers enter Tuesday night with a 65-46 record, having won two games in a row. Los Angeles has a ton of momentum on their side going into this series opening game, as they won three out of four games against the rival San Diego Padres over the weekend. Here, they will look to keep that momentum going against another division rival, with one of their top arms on the mound.
Julio Urias has not enjoyed the same numbers that he is accustomed to in 2023. He has a record of 8-6 this year, but his ERA of 4.69 is higher than would normally be expected of him. But he can still pitch incredibly well in a game like this one, especially given the struggles of the Diamondbacks of late.
Fortunately for Urias and the Dodgers, run support should not be an issue in a game like this one, as the Dodgers have been firing on all cylinders with their offense of late. In their four-game series against the Padres, Los Angeles scored eight or more runs in each of their three wins. That is an encouraging sign going into this game against the Diamondbacks, given the struggles of their starting pitcher for this contest.
The Arizona Diamondbacks enter Tuesday night on a six-game losing streak, which has dropped them to just a single game above .500 on the year. Arizona will feel like they wasted a strong start to this season that saw them take the lead in the NL West for the early portion of the season. But the Diamondbacks still have time to turn things around, starting with this game against the NL West leaders.
If the Diamondbacks are going to end their losing streak and turn things around starting on Tuesday, they will need Brandon Pfaadt to step up in a big way on the mound. Pfaadt enters this contest with a record of 0-5 and an ERA of 7.11. Against one of the best offensive teams in all of baseball, Pfaadt will have his work cut out for him if he wants to come through for his team in this crucial spot.
On the bright side for the Diamondbacks, they do have the potential for a big offensive showing to make up for any issues Pfaadt does have in this contest. The Diamondbacks rank 11th in MLB in runs scored on the season. It may take one of their best offensive efforts of the season to compete in this particular game, but that cannot be ruled out here.
