On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Angels will host the Chicago White Sox at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. The Angels won a thrilling 2-1 game over Chicago on Monday night, clinching that series-opening game on a walk-off wild pitch. In this matchup, the White Sox will have to overcome one of the top pitchers in all of baseball, as Shohei Ohtani is set to take the mound for the Angels.
The Chicago White Sox come into Tuesday’s action at 34-46 on the season to this point, as they sit in fourth place in the AL Central. Chicago has the third-worst record in the American League this season, as they are superior to only the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals in the AL. Here, the White Sox are at an immediate pitching disadvantage in this contest, as they send Michael Kopech to pitch against Shohei Ohtani.
Kopech enters this game with a 3-6 record for the season and an ERA of 4.06, numbers that pale in comparison to those of Ohtani. Fortunately for Kopech, he only needs to navigate around the duo of Ohtani and Mike Trout to maximize his chances of winning this start. However, Kopech has allowed 16 home runs this year, and his vulnerability to the long ball could cause him problems against the top-two bats in the LA lineup.
Offensively, the White Sox have been struggling of late, as they have scored five or fewer runs in five straight games. That includes an output of just one run against the Angels on Monday night. The bats for the White Sox simply need to be better in this contest if they want to avoid a second straight loss to the Angels, but that will be no easy task with Ohtani on the hill.
The Los Angeles Angels enter Tuesday night just six games above .500 for the season, but that has put them in a decent place in the AL West standings. The Angels are five games back of the first place Texas Rangers, and they are in a tie with the Houston Astros for second place in the division. Here, the Angels send their top pitcher to the mound, as Shohei Ohtani will look to deliver his team a second straight win against the White Sox.
Ohtani is 6-3 so far this season, and he has posted an ERA of 3.13 in his 89.0 innings on the mound. He is coming off of a loss in his last start, but that came in a 2-0 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where Ohtani gave up just one run in his seven innings of work. A similar start against the White Sox in this game would give Ohtani’s Angels a huge advantage against a struggling Chicago team.
The Angels will also look to take advantage of a massive home/road advantage going into this contest. The Angels enter this game with a 21-16 record at home, while the White Sox come into this game with a dismal 14-26 record on the road. Look for the Angels to prolong the misery of the White Sox away from home and for Los Angeles to put pressure on the Astros tonight as both teams look to separate from each other and break their second place deadlock in the AL West.
