Vancouver has an edge against Colorado Rapids in the upcoming MLS fixture.
The visitors will look to bounce back from their lackluster show in their last away fixture where they lost 1-4 to Houston Dynamo. Hector Herrera (13’), Griffin Dorsey (44’), Ivan Franco (73’), and Ibrahim Aliyu (84’) netted the goals for Colorado Rapids while an own goal from Erik Sviatchenko (90’) gave them a consolation.
Colorado Rapids struggled at home in their last home fixture as they lost 1-2 against Seattle Sounders. Leo Chu (34’) and Albert Rusnak (56’) netted one goal each for the visitors while Cole Bassett (80’) scored the lone goal for Colorado.
The two clubs have faced off 19 times in the MLS. Colorado Rapids have a slightly better record with 12 wins, while Vancouver Whitecaps have clinched 10 victories. The remaining seven games have ended in a stalemate.
In their previous meeting that took place in April 2023, both clubs played out a goalless draw. Vancouver dominated the match from start to finish by controlling the ball and creating more chances. However, their finishing was not clinical as they failed to find the back of the net.
Colorado has been able to hold their fortress at home in the last five fixtures as they have drawn twice, won twice, and lost one match. However, Vancouver will be concerned with their away form as they’ve lost twice, won two times, and drawn once in their last five meetings.
Colorado has failed to find answers and return as a stronger unit after their Leagues Cup exit in the group stage. The club returned to the domestic league with four consecutive losses while their first win came in the fifth match against New England.
However, the club failed to add to winning momentum as they lost their last two matches to Seattle Sounders and Portland respectively.
The midfielder duo of Bassett and Connor Ronan will be the key for Colorado Rapids. Bassett has been the leading goalscorer for the underperforming Colorado with four goals while Ronan has assisted eight times.
Amongst others, Lalas Abubakar, Kevin Cabral, Michael Barrios, and Diego Rubio have netted twice each for the club. Chilean forward Rubio has also contributed with four assists for the side.
Colorado has been lackluster in their approach in the ongoing season. In any formation, the club has rarely looked like an assured unit defensively and lacked creativity in the midfield.
The Rapids have also struggled to find the cutting edge in front of goals which is one of the prime reasons for their poor season. However, the addition of French forward Kevin Cabral has allowed them to spice up their attack.
Vancouver will search for consistency in this match after their uplifting Leagues Cup performance that saw them qualify for the Round of 32.
The club returned to the domestic league with a 0-1 loss to San Jose at home. However, they later claimed consecutive victories against Portland and Chicago while registering a draw against New York City and adding to their four-match unbeaten run with a win over Toronto.
However, Vancouver have lost their last two matches against Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake.
American forward Brian White and his Scottish teammate Ryan Gauld have been up to the task of rescuing their teams in the ongoing season.
So far this season, the White-Gauld duo has scored 22 goals and nabbed 14 assists in 27 appearances each. White is the club’s top scorer with 12 goals, while Gauld has 10 assists.
Italian coach Vanni Sartini has relied on his 4-4-2 formation this year after the club featured in a 3-4-2-1 combination for the most part of 2022.
The formation creates space for the playmaker Gauld as the full-backs create width pushing high with the outer central midfielder drifting toward the wings. Notably, Sartini’s tactics have been marred by injuries this season as the club accounted for the worst start in their history.
