After enduring a six-game losing streak, Inter Miami have found their groove over the last couple of weeks. They beat their neighbors Miami FC on penalties in the US Open Cup before clinching back-to-back wins in the MLS against Columbus Crew and Atlanta United. This was the first time Inter Miami secured successive wins since the start of the season.
The New England Revolution are running rampant in the Eastern Conference and have gone nine games without a loss in all competitions. This prolific run includes eight MLS games, and one US Open Cup win against Hartford Athletic. Last weekend, New England Revolution eased past Toronto FC to stay level on points with fellow contenders FC Cincinnati.
Inter Miami have returned to winning ways at the right time and will be looking to gain more momentum over the next weeks to close the gap to the top. However, the New England Revolution will be a challenging hurdle to clear. Luck may run out for the hosts this weekend, as the visitors will have the upper hand.
There is not a lot of history between these two sides, as they have only met four times in the MLS over the last two seasons. The scale is evenly balanced as both sides have clinched two wins each.
The very first encounter between these two clubs took place at the DRV PNK Stadium in the 2021 MLS season. Adam Buksa and Arnor Ingvi Traustason bagged braces, and Teal Bunbury scored one as New England Revolution thrashed Inter Miami 5-0.
Inter Miami avenged the outcome of that game in the reverse fixture and nabbed a narrow 1-0 win at the Gillette Stadium after Blaise Matuidi scored the only goal of the match. Last season, Leonardo Campana’s hat-trick handed Inter Miami their first home win over New England.
However, the side could not complete the double over the current league leaders as they fired a blank at the Gillette Stadium and conceded two to suffer their first loss at the venue - the place they will visit in June this year.
As things stand, Inter Miami are 12 points behind the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference. Despite getting off to a stellar start this season, the six-game losing streak snatched all momentum away from Inter Miami.
However, the club is in a recovery phase after winning the last two games. The resurgence will be evident if Inter Miami record a third successive win in the league by causing a major upset against the New England Revolution.
Securing all three points against the league leaders will be a mountainous challenge for the hosts, especially when their defensive frailties are under the microscope. Inter Miami have conceded 11 goals in ten games and have kept no clean sheets since their second game of the season.
In a crunch encounter, a fully fit squad could have handed Inter Miami a huge boost. However, the hosts will be concerned over two positions on the pitch – left-back and midfield. Last weekend, Inter Miami beat Atlanta United but lost Franco Negri to a straight red.
The full-back has scored and assisted this season and has been a critical player in defense. 19-year-old David Ruiz got his first start in midfield in that same game as Inter Miami cope with the long-term absence of Jean Mota, who has provided three assists this season.
The return of Leonardo Campana from injury has been a big relief for Inter Miami recently. The striker has made four appearances so far and has bagged two goals. However, both goals came in the same match two weeks ago.
That means the 22-year-old has fired blanks in three, including the previous game. Campana scored a hat-trick against New England Revolution last season. The Ecuadorian will be hoping for something similar to get his name back on the scoresheet.
Away games are challenging even for the strongest teams in any league, but so far this season, New England Revolution have only suffered one setback in five attempts. Apart from a 4-0 thumping against Los Angeles FC in March, the club have almost always picked up full points.
After winning four and drawing two games, they are undefeated at home. Another win on the road will add a fourth away win in six attempts for New England Revolution and bring their away record almost at par with their record at home.
While the records could get close regarding the points earned, the goal difference fluctuation is high. At home, New England Revolution have a goal difference of 9, while on the road, they have scored and conceded six goals each. That will need improvement.
Despite the club’s poor goal difference away from home, New England Revolution get the goals they need. Their goals-per-match average is only 1.6, which is only the fifth highest in the league. However, scoring at the right moment has kept the New England Revolution at the top.
Bobby Wood is their top scorer, with three goals and two assists in nine matches. Giacomo Vrioni is level with him. Dylan Borrero has scored two in eight games but has been ruled out of the season due to an ACL injury.
The per-match goal average of New England Revolution is below two goals, and that is turning out to be a concerning factor for the club and its fans. In the last five games, New England Revolution have successfully dodged defeat, but all wins have come with narrow margins.
The side were held to a 1-1 draw by Columbus Crew. The same outcome surfaced against FC Cincinnati two weeks ago. The New England Revolution were expected to earn a comfortable win over bottom-dwellers Sporting Kansas City, but even that game was won 2-1. The visitors must build on last weekend’s 2-0 win and continue scoring more goals for comfortable wins.
