This should be a cracking match between two of the West’s best. Los Angeles FC got back to winning ways last week, whereas Seattle Sounders look like their old selves again despite drawing their last league match.
LAFC play this match at home, so it’s no surprise that the bookmakers have them winning this tie, but we think this is a lot tighter than the odds suggest. Seattle Sounders are one of the few Western Conference teams with the quality to match LAFC, and they’ve been in better form than the defending champions in recent weeks.
There’s good value in a Sounders win, but we think it’ll be a step too far for them. A draw, on the other hand, is very plausible and offers great value. We think a low-scoring draw is a highly likely outcome for this game.
LAFC have a superior head-to-head record with seven wins, four draws, and five losses. The matches between the two sides are usually quite tight, and the last one ended in a 0-0 draw. It occurred in March, and there wasn’t much between the two sides on that day. Seattle had 58% of the possession and took 11 shots to LAFC’s 10.
We feel like a similar result might be on the cards this week. LAFC will most likely edge the share of possession and shots on goal, as they’re the home side, but ultimately share the points. There isn’t a lot to take from the last game. In the last five meetings between the sides, LAFC have won two, lost one, and drawn two. Everything points toward a tight game.
LAFC weren’t great against Sporting KC over the weekend, but they got the job done. They got off to a bad start – conceding a penalty in the first quarter of the match. Alan Pulido made no mistake from the spot to give the home side the lead.
The half-ended with Sporting KC leading 1-0 and LAFC on the verge of their third league defeat in succession. Denil Moldonado’s strike three minutes into the second half leveled the scores. LAFC faced a lot of pressure from the Sporting KC attack but did enough to keep the score 1-1 before Carlos Vela showed his quality with a strike in the 90th minute to give LAFC all three points.
LAFC weren’t at their best in this match, but the quality of their players helped them get all three points. Sporting KC had 64% of the possession and took 16 shots to LAFC’s six. They won’t care how they got the points but performing like this won’t get them very far.
LAFC haven’t looked like their usual selves since the CONCACAF Champions League final 3-1 loss on aggregate to Leon. They’ve drawn 0-0 against Atlanta United and lost twice to Houston Dynamo since that game. The victory over the weekend against Sporting KC will help morale, but it wasn’t a convincing performance.
They don’t seem to have fully recovered from the CONCACAF CL finals loss. They know better than most teams just how difficult it is to win this championship; they’ve looked nothing like the team that took the MLS by storm last season. Teams like Cincinnati FC and St Louis FC will pose a serious challenge. We haven’t even mentioned Lionel Messi and Inter Miami.
The upcoming match against the Seattle Sounders will be a good test of where they are currently: mentally and physically. They still have a lot of quality players, so it shouldn’t take them too long to find a solution, but they’re clearly going through a dip in form.
Seattle Sounders and Charlotte FC participated in one of the best matches of this season last week. Seattle Sounders took an 11th-minute lead through Cristian Roldan, but Jaylin Lindsey leveled the scores just six minutes later. Raul Ruidiaz added another before half time to give Sounders a 2-1.
Ashley Westwood ensured that Charlotte were still in the game with a goal in the 53rd minute before Ruidiaz scored his second of the day to give the away side a lead for the third time in the match. The Sounders couldn’t hold on in the end, with Patrick Agyemang ensuring Charlotte FC left the game with a point in the 89th minute.
The game was full of goals, but surprisingly not too full of shots. Charlotte took 10 to Seattle’s seven and had 55% of the possession. They deserved to get something out of this game for their efforts. Seattle will be disappointed with conceding a late goal but it was a good point in the end.
The Seattle Sounders have been a bit up and down in recent weeks. They’re in third place on the Western Conference table, but the Western Conference teams haven’t shown much quality this season compared to the top Eastern Conference sides.
The Sounders became the first MLS side to win the CONCACAF Champions League last season but haven’t shown the same form since the big win. They look a lot more competitive in the league this season, but there’s still some way to go before they can be considered serious title challengers.
The match against Charlotte FC was a good example of how they’ve fared for most of the season. They didn’t really play as well as they could but managed to get something out of this game. The match against LAFC is big because the winner will immediately be perceived as the better team, whereas the loser’s inconsistencies will be magnified to an even greater degree. However, part of the reason we think it’ll end as a draw are the two team’s inconsistencies. Neither team has played with enough conviction this season.
