Inter Miami vs New York Red Bulls Predictions
After ending an agonizing six-game losing streak, Inter Miami won three successive matches, making pundits and spectators think they had bounced back to make their way up the table. The short winning run also included a big win over the New England Revolution. However, after that victory, Inter Miami have lost three successive games over the last couple of weeks. Last weekend they fired a blank for the first time in five games, and it came against CF Montreal.
New York Red Bulls have lost two of their last five MLS games. They lost to the Philadelphia Union at home in the first week of May. After that, the club dodged defeat in three games by winning two and drawing the other. One of those wins came in the Hudson River Derby against New York City FC. Last weekend, they were beaten by Seattle Sounders FC, and just days before that, they were eliminated from the US Open Cup after losing to FC Cincinnati on penalties.
A clash between teams near the bottom of the table is just as intense as summit clashes. Both sides would want to capitalize on their opponent's struggles this season. However, this is a tough one to call and could produce the first-ever draw of this fixture.
Previous Meetings
There have been six MLS encounters between these two clubs. The New York Red Bulls have the better record in this fixture, with four wins under their belt. Inter Miami won the other two matches.
One of those wins came last season at the DRV PNK Stadium when the hosts eased past New York Red Bulls 2-0. Ariel Lassiter and Robert Taylor were on the scoresheet that evening as the visitors failed to find the back of the net.
That win was Inter Miami’s first win over the New York Red Bulls in their own backyard. In the other two home games during the 2020 and 2021 MLS seasons, the hosts conceded four goals in each game and picked up no points.
Overall, at the DRV PNK Stadium, New York Red Bulls have scored eight goals in three games, while Inter Miami have scored just three. This statistic is one of the biggest reasons why the odds are slightly in favor of the visitors.
Inter Miami Cannot Afford Another Long Losing Streak
As the season slowly approaches its midway point, Inter Miami find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table. The club has experienced victories on five occasions this year, but the nine defeats have hurt them the most.
Six of those nine defeats came in a row earlier this season. Somehow, Inter Miami ended that unwanted streak with a win and will certainly hope to do the same in the next game because they are already at the bottom of the pile, and a few more losses could crush the side’s playoff hopes.
There was some respite in the US Open Cup for Inter Miami last week as they reached the quarterfinals after beating Nashville SC. The primary focus of the club this season could be on the Open Cup, considering their poor form in the MLS.
The Void In Midfield Needs To Be Filled
Untimely injuries to a couple of midfielders have hurt Inter Miami during the rough spell. Dixon Arroyo joined the club in April and has been decent in the middle third alongside Ian Fray. However, in the defensive midfield department, Gregore and Jean Mota are both out.
An ankle injury in March ruled Gregore out for six months. The midfielder pocketed one assist in three appearances this season. Jean Mota, who started almost every game last season, is out till November with a ligament injury. He provided three assists in nine games this season.
Defending Set Pieces Will Be A Key Task For The Defense
Several teams have conceded more goals than Inter Miami this season. But that does not mean that the hosts have a robust defense. The defensive duo of Kamal Miller and Serhiy Kryvtsov will have to be alert in defense, especially during set pieces in the next game.
The visitors have been quite shy in front of goal so far, but four out of their ten goals this season have come via set pieces. Hence, the Inter Miami defense must be extra cautious and not give away any silly corners or free kicks.
The Away Drought Continues For New York Red Bulls
Like their next opponent, the New York Red Bulls have struggles of their own, and most of them have come on the road. The New York Red Bulls have lost just one out of seven games at home. They have won three and drawn three.
However, the form away from home has been abysmal. The club is yet to win an away game in the MLS. After last week’s loss in Seattle, New York Red Bulls’ winless away run in the MLS got extended to ten games.
Their last win on enemy territory came in September last year against CF Montreal. Since Inter Miami are also struggling, this game will be a glorious opportunity for the visitors to snatch their first away win of the season.
Aggressive Approach Required In The Final Third
Averaging 0.7 goals per match, New York Red Bulls have the worst offensive record in the entire MLS this season. LA Galaxy share this record, but they have played a game less. The frontline will need to be a lot more clinical in and around the opposition penalty area.
In addition, New York Red Bulls have fired blanks in their last two away games. One of those games was a goalless draw against Toronto FC. In the next game, a draw will not suffice for the visitors who intend to climb into the playoff spots.
Midfielder Out Till June Due To A Muscle Injury
The injury list at New York Red Bulls is not long, but it does have the name of a player who has recently been a key figure behind their minimal success. That player is Omir Fernandez, who has scored three goals so far.
One of these goals came in the Hudson River Derby, and the other came in the 1-1 draw against Houston Dynamo FC earlier this season. Fernandez also scored against DC United in the US Open Cup. But now, he is out due to a muscle injury for a few weeks.
