New England Revolution vs New York Red Bulls Prediction

New England Revolution vs New York Red Bulls Predictions

The fight for the MLS title will be a hotly-contested affair this season, and the New England Revolution are one of the favorites. The team was in great form before the break, as they lost just one out of ten games. Incidentally, that solitary loss came against their next opponents – New York Red Bulls. However, after the defeat, New England Revolution clinched two back-to-back wins and headed to the 2023 Leagues Cup, where they were beaten by New York Red Bulls again. In the last game, they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in Montreal.

Unlike their opponents, New York Red Bull’s form approaching the mid-season break was quite poor. The club only managed four wins in their last ten league games before the break. They lost back-to-back games before the break and then defeated the New England Revolution on penalties in the first group-stage encounter of the 2023 Leagues Cup – a competition in which the Bulls reached the Round of 16. The MLS season resumed on a positive note with a win over DC United before Inter Miami spoiled the party last weekend.

Despite beating the New England Revolution in two different competitions this season, the New York Red Bulls are the underdogs in this fixture. This is primarily due to the form either side has maintained in the league. The host’s home form also plays a big role in making them the favorites.

Previous Meetings

Since 2010, these two clubs have met each other on 35 occasions across all competitions. The New York Red Bulls have the better record with 16 wins under their belt. The New England Revolution have won 11 games, while eight games have ended in a stalemate.

New York Red Bulls have remained unbeaten against the New England Revolution in the past four games across all competitions. New England’s last win over the Bulls came two years ago in a five-goal thriller at the Red Bull Arena.

That same season, the reverse fixture at the Gillette Stadium also ended in a five-goal thriller that went in favor of New England. Last season, the Bulls completed the league double over their next opponents by beating them 1-0 in their own backyard and then beating them 2-1 at home.

The last two league visits to the Red Bull Arena have not been fruitful for the New England Revolution. On both occasions, the hosts have nabbed a 2-1 win. The Red Bull Arena is not a happy hunting ground for New England, as they have only won once in the last ten league visits.

New England Revolution Cannot Afford to Drop Easy Points

After playing really well in the first half of the season, the New England Revolution resumed their MLS campaign with a shock defeat in Montreal. The visitors knocked on the door during the entire game and ended up firing a blank, as CF Montreal scored an 86th-minute winner.

A win in that game would have added three crucial points to the New England Revolution’s tally and taken them above Philadelphia Union in second place. However, they are now level on points with the 2022 MLS runners-up and 11 points behind FC Cincinnati.

In the upcoming games, the New England Revolution will take on New York Red Bulls, Austin FC, and Minnesota United. Being one of the top contenders for the title this season, the side will be expected to win all three games and regain their lost momentum.

The Gillette Stadium Has Become a Fortress

The time has come for the New England Revolution to keep their disappointing Leagues Cup finish in the past and focus on the present if they want a trophy in the near future. They still possess a stellar record in the league, especially in their own backyard.

In 12 MLS home games, the New England Revolution have won nine and drawn three. They are one of only two sides yet to lose a game at home this season in the league. In those 12 games, the hosts have scored 29 goals and conceded just ten.

A Couple of Injury Concerns for the Coach

Right-back Brandon Bye and striker Gustavo Bou will likely miss the game against New York Red Bulls. Bye has picked up a knee injury, while Bou is struggling with a leg injury.

The absence of these two players will deal a blow to the hosts as Bou has scored five goals and provided three assists in 14 appearances, while Bye has been solid in defense down the right.

New York Red Bulls Eying a Three-peat

After experiencing defeat in the last game, the New York Red Bulls will hope to bounce right back in the next game. However, defeating the New England Revolution in their own backyard will be extremely challenging.

The two clubs have faced each other twice already this season, and in both games, the odds were against the Bulls. However, the tables turned, and the New York Red Bulls beat the New England Revolution in the league and the Leagues Cup.

In the next game, the possibility of a three-peat is low, but it is certainly an attainable target for the visitors.

Three Tough Ties on the Trot

The focus of the visitors will entirely be on the upcoming game, but coach Troy Lesesne will also have an eye on the games against Philadelphia Union and New York City FC. In a short span, the New York Red Bulls will have to perform against top sides.

To make matters worse, all three games are away from home. This is a major concern for a side that has played 11 games on the road in the league and won just one of those, losing six and drawing four in the process.

Strikers Continue to Fail in the Final Third

Frankie Amaya is the New York Red Bulls’ top goalscorer in the league this season. The midfielder has bagged four goals in 16 appearances and has struck during a turbulent period during which the attackers have experienced long goalless spells.

Dante Vanzeir has struggled to find goals since his arrival in February, but the striker netted two in the Leagues Cup. He would have been eager to carry that form into the MLS but may not feature in the next game due to a thigh injury.
