The abysmal winless streak of New York Red Bulls got extended to seven games last week when they lost at home to Philadelphia Union. Some respite came in the form of a 1-0 win over DC United in the US Open Cup, but in the MLS, New York Red Bulls have earned just one win in 12 games. They have lost five, drawn six, and are struggling at the bottom of the table.
New York City FC are six points clear of their neighboring rivals but have problems of their own. Despite being higher up the table, the club has failed to build momentum into the vital derby. The visitors have lost four games this season, of which two came over the last couple of weeks. New York City FC also lost in the US Open Cup against FC Cincinnati yesterday.
Both sides are struggling with their respective challenges, but both are expected to bring their A-game to the derby. It will be a tight encounter to call, but based on statistics and recent form, it is safe to say that the visitors have a better chance of clinching all three points in the season’s first Hudson River Derby
History books favor the hosts as New York Red Bull possess the better head-to-head record in this derby. The two clubs have met 21 times in the MLS. Ten games have gone in favor of New York Red Bulls, while New York City FC have nabbed the win on eight occasions.
In those 21 matches, New York Red Bull have scored 35 goals, while their neighbors have netted 27. Last season, New York City FC beat their rivals 1-0 away from home and then won the reverse fixture 2-0 at Yankee Stadium.
The two teams have collided 11 times in the MLS at the Red Bull Arena. The venue is not a happy hunting ground for New York City FC, as they have only won there twice. Last season’s win ended New York City FC’s six-game winless streak at the Red Bull Arena.
Being at the bottom of the pile would not even have been in the worst-case scenario of New York Red Bulls in the preseason discussions. This is the worst start the club have made in the MLS in over 12 years.
They last picked up nine points in 11 games during the 2009 MLS season. Collecting 21 points from 30 games, New York Red Bulls finished rooted to the bottom of the table that season and missed out on playoff qualification for the last time.
The new season is still in its early days, but if New York Red Bull fail to bounce back quickly, they could fail to secure playoff qualification. The club is quite shy in the final third as they have the second-lowest goals-per-match average across both divisions.
After a series of unacceptable results, head coach Gerhard Struber and New York Red Bulls parted ways by mutual consent. Struber had been with the club since October 2020 and had led the side to some significant victories.
However, his winning formula has not worked this season, and now Troy Lesesne is at the helm as Interim manager as New York Red Bulls look for a proper replacement. Lesesne was in charge when the club defeated DC United in the US Open Cup yesterday.
New York Red Bulls are at the bottom of the table. The club is on a seven-game winless streak in the league. They are now without a proper head coach and to make matters worse, the side is also dealing with the controversy around Dante Vanzeir.
The striker was fined and suspended for six games for using a racial slur in the match against San Jose Earthquakes. In the next match, fans walked out of the stadium in a protest against the 25-year-old. The fans also wanted the club to sack Struber.
This week, there was some respite for the New York Red Bulls when they won their US Open Cup encounter against DC United. However, New York City FC could not enjoy a similar feat as the pressure piles on them ahead of a crunch derby.
Over the last couple of weeks, New York City FC have been on the road. They lost against Toronto FC before losing narrowly to Charlotte FC last week. In the US Open Cup, they were beaten by FC Cincinnati.
Hence, New York City FC are coming into the derby after three consecutive losses in all competitions. The side will be eager to clinch three points and end the short, troubling losing run with a win over their arch-rivals.
New York City FC are fifth in the Eastern Conference. They are nine points behind league-leaders New England Revolution. The high position is mainly due to their prolific performance at home this season.
After winning four and drawing one of the five home games this season, New York City FC are undefeated at home. However, their away form is completely opposite. On the road, the team has the worst record in the division after losing four and drawing two of the six games played.
In the 2022 MLS season, New York City FC blanked their rivals in both fixtures. In the last game, New York City FC nabbed a comfortable 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls. Santiago Rodriguez scored one and assisted the other to win the Man of the Match award that evening.
This season, the attacking midfielder is New York City FC’s leading scorer in the MLS with four goals and one assist in ten matches. Rodriguez will certainly be looking for more contributions to add to his tally this weekend.
