Despite being at the top of the Western Conference table, Seattle Sounders FC are only provisional leaders. This is because St. Louis City SC and defending champions Los Angeles FC are only one point off them. The former has three games in hand, while the latter has four. The recent form has been an issue for Seattle Sounders FC, as they have won two and lost three of their last five MLS encounters. This past Wednesday, they lost at home to San Jose Earthquakes.
Any opponent would like to play a side that is struggling, but Portland Timbers may not be able to capitalize on this situation because they have their own problems. The club has only won one game in the last five MLS encounters. In addition, they are coming into this game with a three-game winless streak that started with a goalless draw against Real Salt Lake more than two weeks ago, followed by back-to-back losses against Minnesota United and Sporting Kansas City.
While both teams try to find a way out of a difficult situation, the advantage lies with the hosts in this encounter. While Portland Timbers are a mercurial side capable of causing upsets, Seattle Sounders FC have a strong defense and decent attack that can win this game.
While the odds are heavily in favor of the hosts, history books side with the visitors. Including the reverse fixture this season, the two clubs have locked horns 39 times in the MLS. Portland Timbers have won 18 times, while Seattle Sounders FC have nabbed 14 wins.
Portland Timbers have won four out of the last five meetings between these two sides. After Seattle Sounders FC walloped Portland Timbers 6-2 in 2021, the latter registered four successive wins over the former in the MLS.
The fourth successive win came when the two sides met earlier this season at Providence Park. The hosts came from a goal down to win 4-1 courtesy of a flurry of final-quarter goals from Dairon Asprilla, Nathan Fogaca, Jaroslaw Niezgoda, and Juan Mosquera.
Seattle Sounders FC have hosted Portland Timbers 18 times but have won only seven times. Lumen Field has become a happy hunting ground for Portland Timbers in recent years, as they have won in six out of the last seven visits. The remaining game ended in a draw.
Last season, Seattle Sounders FC lost just five out of 17 home games in the MLS. This season the loss tally at home has already touched three after nine games. The season got off to a bright start for the hosts, and they were unbeaten at home through that phase.
However, all three home losses for the club have come in the last five games. Sporting Kansas City and Austin FC defeated Seattle Sounders FC in two back-to-back home games over two weeks ago.
There was some respite after those two results when the club beat New York Red Bulls last weekend, but could not build momentum, as they went down at home for the third time this season against San Jose Earthquakes in the last match.
Despite faltering in recent games, Seattle Sounders FC have still managed to keep the most clean sheets in the league this season. The hosts have secured a shutout in eight of the 16 games played so far in the MLS.
The concern is rising on the side of the pitch. In the last eight games, Seattle Sounders FC have won three, and all of them have been narrow 1-0’s against Minnesota United, Houston Dynamo FC, and most recently against New York Red Bulls.
Regarding opportunities in the final third, Seattle Sounders FC have created the second-highest big chances in the MLS so far. However, a low conversion rate has returned to haunt them as they could fall from first to third in the table.
After starting the season with eight goals in six games, MLS Golden Boot contender Jordan Morris has scored one in the last nine. The only respite for the strike is that he ended an eight-game barren run with a goal against New York Red Bulls last weekend.
Portland Timbers will arrive at Lumen Field on the back of a three-game winless run. However, the visitors will have a psychological advantage because they are unbeaten in the last four MLS games against Seattle Sounders FC.
Another encouraging factor is the venue itself. Portland Timbers may be struggling on the road this season, but Lumen Field is a venue that has reaped positive results for them over the past few years. In the last seven visits, the club has clinched all available points on six occasions.
Another win would not only give the visitors a fifth consecutive win over Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS, but it will also see them complete a second successive season double over the hosts. There is a lot at stake for the hosts in this crunch encounter.
While Lumen Field is a happy hunting ground for Portland Timbers, their away form this season has been relatively poor so far. The side have won just one out of eight away games this season. However, that solitary win came as a surprise for the 2015 MLS Champions.
In the final match week of April, Portland Timbers visited St. Louis City SC and returned with all three points and their first and only away win of the season. This shows that despite being poor on the road, Portland Timbers can pull off an upset.
Portland Timbers are sitting just outside the playoff qualification zone with 16 points and a shoddy goal difference of -5. The club has conceded 24 goals in 15 games. They have only kept three clean sheets so far.
In the last ten games, Portland Timbers have managed just one shutout, which came in a goalless draw against Real Salt Lake over two weeks ago. To keep the Seattle Sounders FC attackers at bay, the Portland Timbers defense must step up their game and be solid at the back.
