In the last five games, Seattle Sounders FC have lost just once. Apart from that, the club has beaten Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City, and LA Galaxy. They also held defending champions Los Angeles FC to a goalless draw, establishing themselves as one of the top contenders for the MLS title.
St. Louis City SC are flying high in their debut MLS season. They won the first five games of the season before facing their first-ever loss in the league against Minnesota United. After scoring 15 goals in the first five games, St. Louis City SC fired a blank for the first time this season.
This will undoubtedly be a very tight contest between two strong sides. The odds strongly favor the home team, but getting a positive result against St. Louis City SC will be no easy task for any side this season. Seattle Sounders FC are coming into this game after scoring six goals in the last two games, but their leaky defense could allow St. Louis City SC to score and secure a point.
St. Louis City SC are making their MLS debut this season. Hence, the two clubs have never clashed before, and this will be the first-ever match between the two sides.
So far this season, Seattle Sounders FC have only lost one game, and that was against FC Cincinnati away from home. In three home games this campaign, Seattle Sounders FC have won two and drawn one.
The two wins have come against Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake. Their solitary home draw was a goalless encounter with Los Angeles FC in which Seattle Sounders FC were the better side but could not get the decisive goal to clinch all three points against the defending champions.
That draw extended the hosts’ unbeaten home streak to seven games in the MLS. The last time Seattle Sounders FC lost in their own backyard was in August last year when they lost 2-1 against an opponent they have already beaten this season - Real Salt Lake.
That is the only loss Seattle Sounders FC have encountered in their last ten home games in the MLS. The club will be eager to extend this impressive streak when they take on what will probably be their biggest challenge this season - St. Louis City SC.
Seattle Sounders are scoring at an average of two goals per match as they have nabbed 12 in their first six games of the season. Eight of those 12 goals have come via Jordan Morris. The striker has made an exceptional start this season and is one of the top contenders for the Golden Boot.
Surprisingly, Morris’ performance last season was quite subpar compared to the performances he is putting in this year. The 28-year-old ended the 2022 MLS campaign with seven goals in 29 appearances.
This season, it has taken just six games for him to surpass that tally. He has only failed to score in two out of six games this season, and his best performance came two weeks ago against Sporting Kansas City when he scored all four goals in his side’s 4-1 victory.
While coach Brian Schmetzer will have his first-choice starting lineup in place for the crucial tie, he will be without a couple of squad players that he has used as substitutes on a few occasions. The duo of winger Dylan Teves and left-back Kelyn Rowe will miss this game.
Teves has made two appearances from the bench this season, while Rowe has made one substitute appearance and one start. Rowe was impressive in defense when he made his first start of the season in the club’s 4-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.
Despite losing the first game of their debut season, St. Louis City SC are still at the summit of the Western Conference. However, their next opponents are the ones who are hot at their heels in the league table.
St. Louis City SC would surely have preferred to face Seattle Sounders FC on the back of a six-game winning streak, but that will not be the case when the two sides meet. It will be interesting to see how the visitors react in the game that follows a loss.
The new club will have to bounce back against a team that will probably be their biggest competitor in the Western Division. If St. Louis City SC can walk away with three points from Lumen Field, they will be the top favorites to finish at the top of the league this season.
Six games into the new season, Morris is already trying to pull clear in the Golden Boot race this season. However, St. Louis City SC’s top striker and leading goalscorer Joao Klauss will be eager to cut the deficit to Morris as soon as possible.
The Brazilian striker has scored five goals and assisted one in six appearances so far. Last weekend’s 1-0 loss against Minnesota United was the only game in which Klauss has failed to score or create this season.
The 26-year-old will have to jump on the scoresheet if he wishes to be a top contender in this season’s Golden Boot race. The gap to Morris is already at three goals, and the more it increases, the tougher it will be for Klauss to win the coveted trophy in his debut MLS season.
Operating down the right flank, Rasmus Alm was trying to cement his position in the starting lineup before the winger picked up a knee injury last week. The Swede has made five appearances this season, and two of those have been as a substitute.
One of those two substitute appearances came in the match against Real Salt Lake. The 27-year-old came on at the hour mark. A little over 15 minutes after coming on, Alm scored the fourth and final goal of the match as St. Louis City SC waltzed away with a 4-0 win.
