The hosts were dodging defeats well over the last month but encountered their first hiccup last weekend against Sporting Kansas City. Before that disappointment, Vancouver Whitecaps were undefeated in four challenging games. They walloped Houston Dynamo 6-2 before holding Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 draw. They drew another game against FC Cincinnati and then defeated Los Angeles FC in their own backyard. This stellar run was brought to an end by Sporting Kansas City last weekend.
Despite being second on the table, Seattle Sounders FC’s recent form has been quite disappointing. In the last five games, the club has only won one game, and that win came last weekend against Houston Dynamo FC. Before that, they were winless in five games. They drew against Orlando City, Charlotte FC, and Portland Timbers and lost the games against San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles FC. The win against Houston last weekend was aided by the dismissal of Micael.
Seattle Sounders FC are trying to tighten their grip on second place and pull clear of third-placed Los Angeles FC. However, they are up against a side that has already shown its “giant-slayer” potential and have a stellar record at home. Vancouver Whitecaps have a clear advantage in this fixture.
While the current form and odds favor the hosts, the history books strongly favor the visitors. The two clubs have met each other 35 times in the MLS. Seattle Sounders FC have won 17 of those encounters, while Vancouver Whitecaps have won just nine matches. Nine games have ended in a draw.
Earlier this season, the two sides have already met at the BC Place. Vancouver Whitecaps nabbed a 2-0 win courtesy of a goal from Pedro Vite and an own goal from Stefan Frei. Despite dominating the possession, Seattle Sounders FC were unable to create a lot of promising chances. Vancouver Whitecaps faced no such issue and ended up with all three points.
BC Place has not been a good venue to visit for Seattle Sounders FC. Vancouver Whitecaps have hosted Seattle Sounders FC 18 times in the MLS. The visitors have only won six of those games. However, the hosts have the worst record, as they have only won five. Seven games have ended in draws.
Seattle Sounders FC have only won one of the last five encounters between these two teams at BC Place. That victory came in 2020. After that, two games went in favor of the hosts, and one ended in a draw.
While Vancouver Whitecaps are dangling in the final playoff spot, they have pulled off some surprising results over the past few weeks. After starting the season with a five-game winless streak, Vancouver Whitecaps recovered with two back-to-back wins.
The recovery led to several wins and draws that were completely unexpected before kick-off. One of these wins also came against their next opponents, and apart from that, Vancouver Whitecaps beat the defending MLS champions Los Angeles FC.
FC Cincinnati have been flying high this season and are six points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference table. Almost a month ago, an 89th-minute Ryan Gauld penalty restored parity and ended FC Cincinnati’s six-game winning streak in the MLS.
In addition to their prolific performances against top sides, Vancouver Whitecaps are also backed by their solid form at home this season in the MLS. The club has played ten games this season and have only lost one of them, winning five and drawing four.
The only home loss Vancouver Whitecaps have experienced in the MLS this season came on the opening day of this season against Real Salt Lake. Javain Brown had put the hosts in front in the first half, but two goals from Justen Glad and Damir Kreilach turned the game around.
Vancouver Whitecaps have the seventh-best goals-per-match average in the MLS this season. Offense may not be a huge concern for the hosts in the upcoming game but their attackers will be tested since Seattle Sounders FC have kept the most clean sheets this season.
There will be concerns in defense because Vancouver Whitecaps have only kept five clean sheets in 19 games this season. The hosts have not secured a shutout in the last six MLS games. Interestingly, their last clean sheet came in the game against Seattle Sounders FC in May.
As things stand, Seattle Sounders FC are second in the Western Conference, level on points with third-placed Los Angeles FC and three points behind St. Louis City SC. In addition to that, both St. Louis City and Los Angeles FC have a game in hand.
If the other two teams capitalize on their games, Seattle Sounders FC could drop to second place. As the club struggles, they are lucky to be still in second place because Los Angeles FC have lost three consecutive games, keeping Seattle Sounders FC in second place.
Even St. Louis City SC were unable to pull clear of the two teams below them, as they have won just two out of their last six games. Seattle Sounders FC will have to pick up their own form if they want to stay close to the summit of the division.
The goals-per-match average of Seattle Sounders FC is inferior to Vancouver Whitecaps’ average. The visitors are coming into this game with an average of 1.2 goals per match. However, they have created the second-most big chances in the league.
Failure to convert these opportunities has not allowed Seattle Sounders FC to become a force to reckon with. A major contributing factor to this is the absence of top-scorer Jordan Morris. The winger’s last appearance came in the 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC.
So far this season, Seattle Sounders FC have played nine games on the road. Of those, they have only won three games and lost four. Their last away win came in May against Houston Dynamo FC.
After that result, Seattle Sounders FC have lost two and drawn one of their last three away games. The match against Vancouver Whitecaps is quite crucial, and a win can help Seattle Sounders FC get back on track.
