  • Boston College is now ranked in the top 25 after starting the year 2-0

  • Missouri has won their first two contests by a combined score of 89-0

  • The Missouri Tigers enter the contest as a -16.5 point favorite in this top-25 matchup

After shocking the nation by going 11-2 last year, the Missouri Tigers entered this season with playoff aspirations as they brought back a majority of their core that led them to a successful 2023 campaign. They have looked every bit the part of a deserving SEC contender as they have held their first two opponents to a combined score of 89-0. As for Boston College, they have entered the top 25 after a 2-0 start to their season with one of their wins being against the Florida State Seminoles.

Boston College vs. Missouri Pick

Boston College will be given an opportunity to prove they deserve their rank in a matchup against Missouri, yet the metrics say they are severely outmatched as they do not have the defense to slow down the Tigers' offense. With star wide receiver Luther Burden expected to be 100%, back the Tigers to clear their team total over as they should face minimal resistance in their efforts of putting up points on the board.

Boston College vs. Missouri Predictions

Boston College

While a win is a win no matter how you look at it, it’s tough to justify the Eagle’s top-25 rank when digging deep into their metrics. Especially when looking at their defense as they rank a horrendous 82nd in Def Success Rate, 110th in Explosiveness, 120th in Finishing Drives, and 123rd in Havoc. If anything, their win over Florida State says more about the Seminoles' season-long outlook rather than Boston College actually being a top-ranked team.

As for how the Eagles' defense matches up against the high-flying Missouri pass attack, it may be a long night for their secondary. Productive coverage has been an issue for their back end as the Eagles' secondary ranks 103rd in Def Pass Success Rate, 115th in Def Pass Explosiveness, and 124th in Def Pass PPA. To make matters worse for Boston College, the Tigers star wide receiver Luther Burden is expected to be 100% after dealing with an illness last weekend.

Matching the Tigers' scoring pace will also be an issue for Boston College as Missouri’s front seven is capable of neutralizing the Eagles' rush attack as Missouri ranks 11th in Def Rush Success Rate and 25th in Def Rush PPA. Defending against Rush Explosiveness is an issue, yet the Tigers get the benefit of leaving their secondary in single coverage against an anemic pass attack to help stack the box with their linebackers to defend against the run.

Missouri

Since lighting the nation on fire off the backs of their explosive offense, Missouri has stayed in elite form by getting off to a 2-0 start and by a combined score of 89-0. More impressive yet, the Tigers have managed to do this while Brady Cook has underwhelmed as he has only thrown for 456 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Granted, Cook and the Missouri offense has not really had to show anything as they started their year with two tune-up games against the Buffalo Bulls and Murray State Racers. While Boston College is a step up in quality of opponent, they are still severely outmatched against Missouri’s pass attack when Cook gets the benefit of a wide-open playbook.

With expectations of Missouri’s offense recapturing last year's success, expect the Tigers to move the ball down the field at a consistent rate with ease as the Eagles' secondary has struggled mightily in coverage. The issue with backing Missouri on the full game spread is that the Eagles' offense calls the run at a heavy rate, potentially slashing the number of offensive possessions for the Tigers while they call off the dogs late in the second half. Bypass the spread and back the Tigers to clear their team total over.
