  • Notre Dame is currently in the 12 team playoff per the latest bracket reveal

  • Notre Dame can only make the playoffs with an at-large bid

  • USC’s defense ranks above league average in Def Finishing Drives and Explosiveness

With only one game remaining in the regular season, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish can secure their spot in the playoffs with a win this Saturday against the USC Trojans. Even at 10-1, Notre Dame’s spot in the playoffs is vulnerable as they can only make it to the postseason with an at-large bid while plenty of contenders linger right behind them.

Notre Dame vs. USC Predictions

Notre Dame vs. USC My Pick

Since their embarrassing loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame has managed to rattle off 9 wins in a row while scoring at least 30 points or more in 8 of those contests. A much needed stretch of play to help salvage their playoff hopes, yet negative regression looms large against the USC Trojans. Especially when in the middle of the field as Notre Dame’s offense ranks just 90th in Success Rate with no help from their pass attack, now facing off against a front seven who excels at stopping the run.

Notre Dame vs. USC Predictions

Notre Dame Preview

With Notre Dame still being an independent, their playoff hopes reside on securing an at-large bid. While this does hurt their chances of making the playoffs, the Fighting Irish are still firmly in the mix after the latest bracket reveal. Still, with no chance of securing one of the five auto bids with a conference championship, Notre Dame is in a must win situation this weekend against the USC Trojans.

Should Notre Dame want to keep their National Championship hopes alive with a win over the Trojans, then their defense must continue to play at a high level as they face off against an offense who excels at creating methodical drives down the field. Fortunately for the Fighting Irish, their defense is more than capable of halting their progress and forcing USC into early outs as they enter the contest ranked 31st in Def Success Rate and 14th in Explosiveness.

Stopping the Trojans pass attack is vital as USC calls the pass at one of the heaviest rates in the nation while ranking top-10 in Pass Success Rate. That spells potential disaster against Notre Dame as their secondary has excelled at neutralizing opposing pass production this season, fielding a back end who ranks top-15 in Def Pass Success Rate and PPA. Factor in Jayden Maiava struggling to generate Explosiveness and USC will fail to exploit Notre Dame’s struggles with stopping the big play.

USC Preview

After entering the year as one of the contenders for the Big Ten Conference Championship, the USC Trojans have severely underwhelmed as they are currently 6-5 and out of playoff contention as well. A stunning collapse since kicking off their season with a massive win over the LSU Tigers, yet the Trojans were incapable of building on their momentum since the start of conference play.

Even with nothing to play for, the Trojans can at least take satisfaction in knowing they can ruin their rivals chances of making the playoffs if they beat the Fighting Irish as a sizable underdog. Should USC want to generate the upset, then their defense must take advantage of Notre Dame’s one dimensional offense and stall out their drives down the field. Riley Leonard has struggled to generate pass production this season, forcing Notre Dame to rely on their ground game to get into scoring position.

With little threat of getting beat over the top by a pass attack who ranks below league average in Pass Success Rate and PPA, the Trojans defense can stack the box at a heavier rate to help neutralize Notre Dame’s ground game and mask their own low mark in Def Rush Explosiveness. Factor in their own offense being prone to stalling out against Notre Dame’s defense and this contest may feature a minimal amount of scoring opportunities.
