  • Kansas City Chiefs' backup quarterbacks include Carson Wentz, Chris Oladokun, and Ian Book.

  • Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that the starters will play at least one series.

  • One Chiefs player to watch for is second-year player Nikko Remigio after flashing during training camp.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs will face off during Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Below, I’ll predict how the game will go and provide three NFL prop bets using odds from bet365 Sportsbook.

Jaguars vs. Chiefs Predictions

While the starters may take a series on both sides, I’ll focus mostly on the backups. For the Chiefs, we’ll see a heavy dose of Carson Wentz, Chris Oladokun, and Ian Book, with most of the work going toward Oladokun and Book. As for the Jaguars, former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will see action along with journeyman C.J. Beathard.

Beathard recently threw an interception during the 10th training camp practice to Jarrian Jones.

During practice at training camp on Sunday, August 4, the Chiefs worked on the new kickoff rules and utilized the deep passing attack more. However, it remains to be seen how that factors into the first preseason game as opposed to the first-team offense getting on the same page.

Looking at the backup quarterbacks, I’d slightly favor the Jaguars. Jones was the starter in New England last season and had a poor roster to work with, while Beathard has started 13 games in his career, including one last season for the Jaguars, in which he completed 17 of 24 passes for 178 yards and had 24 rushing yards.

Look for Beathard and a combination of Oladokun/Book to get the majority of reps with the Beathard-led Jaguars coming out because of the more reliable quarterback play and likely better running back room with Tank Bigsby, D’Ernest Johnson, Keilan Robinson, and more.

Jaguars vs Chiefs Best Prop Bets

Locating prop bets during the preseason can be difficult, but bet365 has a few to examine. Let's take a look.

Winning Margin Jaguars by 1-6 Points (+280) at bet365

With a total of 39 points and a point spread of just 2.5 points favoring the Jaguars, this will likely be a close game.

As mentioned above, these backup units do match up quite well.

Last season, during the preseason, Beathard started one game and played in three. He completed 26 of 43 passes for 352 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He averaged 8.2 yards per attempt, a career-best during the preseason.

It remains to be seen how long Wentz will play, but if he plays longer than I expect, this could certainly go in the Chiefs' direction.

That said, I’ll depend on a combination of Jones/Beathard and a solid backfield to help the Jaguars cross the finish line.

Chiefs Over 17.5 Points (-120) at bet365

The Chiefs have a backup quarterback room with Wentz, Oladokun, and Book. While I don’t put a lot of faith in Book, Oladokun has shown some ability to run. In 2023, he had 37 rushing yards on two tries, and in the passing game, he completed 16 of 26 passes for 181 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in three games, none of which he started.

As for backup receivers and other skill guys, we could see a heavier dose of Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, Nikko Remigio, and even Mecole Hardman.

Toney is fighting to stay on the team, Moore has always flashed upside, and Remigio has been a standout in camp. As for the running backs, I’d like to see more talent beyond the starter Isiah Pacheco, but Clyde Edwards-Helaire is still kicking around.

There’s still plenty of talent, especially at the receiver position, to help carry this team over 17.5 points. Further, the defense has a lot of excellent depth, and rookies are looking to make the team help stall out drives for the Jaguars and help put the Chiefs in good field position.

Jaguars Over 20.5 Points (-110) at bet365

The Jaguars possess two backup quarterbacks who have played in legitimate NFL games, and this experience alone will help them against backup defenders. Further, a series or two from the starters could be enough to score even a single touchdown, which gets us a third of the way there.

Even though he’s part of the starter group, I wonder if first-round pick Brian Thomas Jr. might see more action to help get some reps under his belt. Even a quarter of him on the field against backup Chiefs corners could put the Jaguars offense in an excellent position.

Listed as a backup for the Jaguars, wide receiver Devin Duvernay is another player who’s had a lot of NFL action and can take the top off a defense. He’ll likely see some opportunities through the new kickoff rules, which is another fantastic opportunity for him to take one to the house.

Lastly, the running game will play a massive role here, and Bigsby, Johnson, and even rookie Keilan Robinson will play a massive role.
