The Chiefs arrived at 2-0 despite Patrick Mahomes playing horribly against the Bengals, Travis Kelce catching 39 total yards of passes, and the defense surrendering 22.5 points per game. They’re still the best team in the NFL until proven otherwise, but their upcoming schedule against the Falcons, Chargers, Saints, 49ers, Raiders, and Buccaneers is anything other than a cakewalk.
Offseason optimists in Houston have to feel pretty confident right about now. C.J. Stroud is quickly proving that his rookie season wasn’t a fluke, and his team is even more talented than it was in 2023 following the additions of Joe Mixon, Stefon Diggs, Danielle Hunter, Kamari Lassiter, and others. Houston also has arguably the easiest schedule of the top contenders with a standout matchup against the Bills in Week 5.
Josh Allen isn’t turning the ball over and is performing at a high level just the way he did down the stretch in 2023. He isn’t taking many shots down the field and doesn’t have dynamic receiving threats, but he and James Cook’s ability to run the football has been enough to overwhelm his early opponents. The defense also looks like one of the 10 best in the league despite the plethora of injuries and changes that were made during the offseason.
Jim Harbaugh continues to be the walking embodiment of the mantra “Win, baby, win.” The Chargers’ new defensive, run-first principles helped them take down the Panthers and Raiders by a combined score of 48-13, and they have soared to the top in many defensive rankings after disappointing in years past. They’ll run into trouble if they get into a shootout, but J.K. Dobbins, the league’s leading rusher, has allowed them to control the clock and grind out wins.
Kevin O’Connell might be the sharpest offensive mind in football. He continually puts his players and team in winning positions no matter the circumstance or lack of available players, as he’s now doing with Sam Darnold and with injuries to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. Brian Flores’ defense put the heat on Brock Purdy last week, and Minnesota suddenly looks like a true contender in the NFC North.
We had the Buccaneers as our longshot pick last week when they were at +3800 odds. They shortened to +1100 after defeating the Lions on the road, and with Baker Mayfield and the defense playing the way they are, who’s to say they will slow down any time soon? Their schedule isn’t easy but could be worse with games against the Broncos, Eagles, Falcons, Saints, and Ravens on the horizon.
The Chiefs are the obvious pick, but we worry that Kelce’s regression, “Hollywood” Brown’s injury, and the recent loss of Isaiah Pacheco will catch up to them. Houston, meanwhile, looks capable of winning in a variety of ways, has an elite quarterback-head coach combination, and is young enough to get up for regular season games. If they beat the Bills in a few weeks, they’ll have a great shot of winning 10 games before they lose one.
