The Kansas City Chiefs dynasty is storming into another year of challenges from teams such as the San Francisco 49ers, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Today, we’re focusing on an entirely different race - the race for the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Carolina Panthers had the worst record in the NFL in 2023, yet there are two teams expected to do worse than them this time around.

The Patriots’ dynasty is officially over (as if the last few years weren’t proof enough). 36-year-old Jerod Mayo is taking over for Bill Belichick as the head coach and inherits a roster that is severely bereft of talent and experience, particularly on the offensive side of the football. 21-year-old rookie QB Drake Maye will have his hands full behind a shoddy offensive line and an uninspiring cast of wide receivers.
The Broncos play in a division with the best team in the NFL (the Chiefs), the coach with the highest winning percentage in the league (Jim Harbaugh), and, well, the reigning 8-9 Raiders. They have one of the worst quarterback rooms in the NFL and downgraded their roster after finishing 20th in scoring and 27th in points allowed per game. Sean Payton is going to need to pull a rabbit out of his hat to have this team even close to competitive.
The Panthers finished with the worst record in the NFL a year ago as Bryce Young struggled to adapt to the professional game. They eased the burden on his shoulders ever so slightly by adding Diontae Johnson, though they lost Brian Burns and still have an overall inadequate roster. Their division is one of the easiest in the league, however, which gives them a glimmer of hope.
The Giants have a nasty case of buyer’s remorse with Daniel Jones, yet they’re going all-in with him in 2024. The loss of Saquon Barkley will put Jones at the center of nearly everything the Giants do on offense, which is not a recipe for success. On the bright side, New York’s defensive front is quietly elite and could help them hang around in many games, though it will be tough for it to outright win them those games.
Is Will Levis the guy or not? The answer to that question will define the season for the Titans, who added Calvin Ridley, Tony Pollard, and L’Jarius Sneed, among others during the offseason. They couldn’t stop the pass last year and will need to couple improvements in the secondary with a high-scoring offense in the first year of the post-Derrick Henry era.
Projecting the Commanders’ season is nothing more than extreme guesswork, as roughly two-thirds of the roster and coaching staff were replaced during the offseason. Second-overall pick Jayden Daniels leads a new generation of arrivals that look like upgrades on paper, though Daniels’ inexperience combined with all of the moving parts will make immediate success difficult to attain. The defense also has holes despite an outstanding linebacking corps.
If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have a quarterback. That’s the predicament the Raiders find themselves in and neither Aidan O’Connell nor Gardner Minshew appear to be the long-term solution anywhere in the NFL, yet they’re both being counted on to guide the Raiders to victory. They also lost Josh Jacobs and Michael Gallup and should have one of the lowest-scoring offenses in the league.
The Cardinals, like the Raiders, have extreme problems on one side of the football: defense. Their personnel puts them at a disadvantage against most of their opponents, and second-year coach Jonathan Gannon has not proven that his intelligence alone is enough to overcome that hindrance. Kyler Murray also splits opinion and will be behind a mediocre offensive line.
The Patriots have a path to wins because of their defense. That said, there’s no guarantee that their output under Belichick will stay the same with him out the door and Mayo on the headset. We also don’t like a 21-year-old quarterback having to play behind this offensive line and with these weapons, especially during the harsh conditions of winter that will inevitably come later this year.
