Who’s Winning the Michigan Senate Race?
Heading down the home stretch of the election, El-Sayed is the favorite to win Michigan’s Senate seat. Kalshi, one of the best political betting sites, is giving the Democrat a 74% chance of winning the election, with Rogers lagging behind at 26%. In the second week of August, El-Sayed had a 55% implied probability of winning, but that number has only increased over the last several weeks. However, the latest polls show that the race is much tighter. An October 2 poll from Fox News showed that El-Sayed has a modest 51-48 lead among registered voters. Of course, Rogers held a 51-47 lead in August, according to polls, so El-Sayed is surely trending in the right direction.

Michigan Senate Race Explained
Democrat Gary Peters currently holds the Senate seat being contested by El-Sayed and Rogers. He originally won the seat in 2024 and has served two terms in the Senate. However, he announced last year that he would not seek a third term, saying that he did not envision himself as a career Senator, adding that he was ready to “pass the reins for the next generation.”
With Peters stepping aside, the seat became open. El-Sayed, who is 26 years younger than Peters, certainly represents a new generation of Democrats in Michigan. He endured a competitive primary with current Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens, beating her by a small margin. Rogers, meanwhile, ran unopposed in the Republican primary to earn his party’s nomination. He also ran for the Senate two years ago, but lost by a narrow margin to Elissa Slotkin, who is Michigan’s other Senator.
Why the Michigan Result Decides Senate Control
Michigan is considered critical if the Democrats hope to gain a majority in the Senate. The way the Senate is currently constructed, Democrats need to flip four seats to earn control. Of course, that assumes that they hold onto all of their current seats, including the one Peters currently holds. That’s not necessarily going to be easy in Michigan, which was very much considered a swing state in 2024 that Donald Trump won. It’s also worth noting that Rogers lost his Senate bid to Slotkin two years ago by just over 19,000 votes. After such a close race, the Democrats holding onto Michigan should not be considered a foregone conclusion.
How to Trade the Michigan Senate Market
If you use the best prediction markets to trade on the Michigan Senate race, each candidate has a value between 1¢ and 99¢. That number is the price to buy one share of a contract for that candidate. The number also indicates the implied probability that particular candidate will win. The closer to 99¢, the more likely that candidate is to win, while prices closer to 1¢ indicate the candidate is a long shot to win. Winning contracts resolve at $1, with the profit per share being the difference between $1 and the original price. For example, if you trade on a candidate at 75¢, if that candidate wins, the profit will be 25¢ per share.

While El-Sayed looks increasingly likely to win the Michigan Senate race, the election is far from over. After his narrow win in the Democratic primary, El-Sayed needs to win over the large contingent of Michigan Democrats who voted for Stevens in the primary. He’s also considered far more progressive than Slotkin, who defeated Rogers in 2024. Slotkin appealed to independents and moderate Democrats, and El-Sayed needs to be strong in those areas as well, especially with the polls indicating a closer race than the prediction markets show.
