Texas Senate Race Explained

The seat that Talarico and Paxton are fighting over is currently held by Republican John Cornyn. Despite being the incumbent, Cornyn faced multiple challengers in a primary earlier this year. No candidate earned a majority in the primary election, forcing Cornyn and Paxton into a runoff that Paxton won by a wide margin. 

Despite winning the primary runoff against Cornyn, Paxton has continued to lose ground in the general election with Talarico. He’s been the Attorney General of Texas for over a decade, but was impeached in 2023 amidst allegations of corruption. Paxton is also in the middle of a messy and public divorce with his wife Angela, who has made claims of infidelity. Both Paxton’s personal and professional troubles have rubbed voters the wrong way, giving Talarico a chance to become the first Democrat to be elected to the Senate in Texas since 1988.

Due to Texas being a longtime Republican stronghold, this race has a chance to play a major role in the Democrats taking over control of the Senate. For decades, it could be assumed that Texas would have two Republican Senators. But with Talarico holding onto a lead, that’s become a faulty assumption. If the Democrats could take control of a Senate seat that the Republican Party has spent years taking for granted, it would completely alter the calculus in the Senate and give the Democrats a huge lift when it comes to earning a majority.

The price is akin to the implied probability of that candidate winning, so the closer to 99¢, the more likely that candidate is to win the election. This means the profit is the difference between the price of the contract and $1. If you trade a contract priced at 65¢ and that candidate wins, the profit will be 35¢ per share.
