Tottenham Hotspur are still alive. A 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend was a massive result for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who otherwise faced the prospect of falling further adrift of safety. The win at Molineux Stadium was not enough to pull them out of the bottom three due to West Ham United’s success against Everton at the same time. But a first triumph of 2026 has given Tottenham something to build on.
Make no mistake, though: Spurs are still in trouble. With just four full rounds of Premier League fixtures remaining, they are 18th. By the time their game against Aston Villa kicks off on Sunday, the north Londoners could be five points shy of 17th place. That would leave them under huge pressure.
It is remarkable that Tottenham are even in this position. Their demotion from the top flight would be the most shocking in the modern era, perhaps of all time. Spurs are a member of the ‘big six’, the Premier League’s unofficial elite. They played in the Champions League as recently as March, and were runners-up in that competition in 2019. Tottenham, in other words, should not be in this position.
De Zerbi, their third manager of the campaign, has made an impact. Tottenham were much improved in a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in his first home game at the helm, although the concession of a late equalizer was heartbreaking for the club’s supporters. Then came that 1-0 victory over Wolves. It was not particularly pretty, but Tottenham got the job done and that is more important than anything given both their predicament and the late stage of the campaign.
“I hope this result can change something in our head, in our mentality,” De Zerbi said after the defeat of Wolves. “Because I believe to stay up. If I stay here, it’s because I’m positive. If you are Tottenham or another team, the most important are the qualities of the players and the human level of the players.”

This could end up going down as one of Aston Villa’s greatest ever seasons. Unai Emery’s side have exceeded expectations in the Premier League, where an eight-point advantage over sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion has put them on the brink of securing Champions League qualification.
Villa are also on the hunt for a trophy: they are through to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will contest a two-legged tie against fellow English outfit Nottingham Forest. Winning that tournament would also guarantee a spot in the Champions League, but silverware is the biggest attraction for Villa, who have not got their hands on a trophy since 1996.
Emery has done a brilliant job once again this term, confirming his status as one of the very best managers in England. It is not easy to balance two competitions with a team like Villa’s, but Emery has done it masterfully. A Europa League expert, at the time of writing Emery’s men are the favorites to triumph in the continent’s secondary tournament.
A few months back, some began to wonder whether Villa might be in the title race. They have tailed off since then, but it is to the credit of Emery and his players that a top-five finish is almost certain. A 1-0 loss to Fulham last weekend was frustrating, but Villa had previously taken seven points from the last nine on offer.

Sunday’s game between these two teams falls midway through Aston Villa’s Europa League semi-final. Provided the tie is still in the balance, Emery’s team are likely to be somewhat distracted by the upcoming second leg. They are not yet sure of a top-five finish in the Premier League, but their strong likelihood of getting over the line allows Villa to prioritize Europe.
That is good news for Tottenham Hotspur. Of course, a trip to Villa Park is never easy. Only the top three of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have collected more points at home than Villa, who will still be going for victory on Sunday despite the looming fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham remain a deeply flawed side. They are not 18th in the table by accident. But De Zerbi has brought about an uptick since he took charge. That is a source of hope for Spurs. The fact that Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke have entered a treatment room that was already packed does not help, but Tottenham still have the players to get themselves out of this mess.
Can they go to Villa and win? It will not be easy, but they have a chance. Tottenham need to play with discipline and diligence in defense, but they also need to show more creativity in the final third. With Villa liable to be distracted, Tottenham can get something on Sunday.
Make use of the double chance market by tipping an away win or a draw. We fancy De Zerbi’s men to extend their unbeaten run to three games.
