Last weekend was a good one for Liverpool, who gained ground on all their rivals for a top-five finish. Manchester United lost to Leeds United, Chelsea suffered defeat by Manchester City, and Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest. That meant Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Fulham boosted their standing relative to their fellow participants in the race for Champions League qualification.

The situation will have changed again by the time the Merseyside derby kicks off on Sunday. But heading into the weekend, Liverpool are fifth in the table on 52 points, with sixth-placed Chelsea four points behind them. Meanwhile, three points separate the Reds from Manchester United and Aston Villa in fourth and third respectively.

The best online sportsbooks expect Chelsea to miss out from here. The Blues are certainly underdogs, not only due to their four-point deficit but also because they are in poor form. Everton Aim to Qualify for European Soccer in Next Few Weeks

The race for Europe does not just involve the four teams mentioned in the passage above. If Manchester City win the FA Cup as the sportsbooks expect them to, sixth and seventh place would qualify for the Europa League and the side that finishes eighth would be involved in next season’s Conference League.

Several teams are therefore in the European conversation, including Everton. If the campaign ended today, Everton would be in the Conference League. But they are below Brentford in seventh (a potential Europa League spot) on goal difference alone. And given they trail Liverpool in fifth by five points, a win this weekend would keep Everton in the mix for the Champions League, albeit as outsiders.

Everton are ticking along nicely, though. A late goal saw them salvage a point against Brentford last time out, as David Moyes’ men drew 2-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Everton have now lost just one of their last five matches. Being European contenders certainly makes a pleasant change from the relegation battles Everton fans have witnessed in recent years - as Moyes himself referenced after the Brentford game.

“[It’s] better to be in this position - [I would] rather that than be fighting round the bottom end of the league,” he said. “We want the players to enjoy it and see how they do in this position. It's a test for them as well, can we win the games. We only have to win a few in the run-in.”

Who Will Win the Latest Edition of the Merseyside Derby?

This is the first Merseyside derby scheduled to take place at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton’s new home as of this season. It is fair to say the Toffees have had one or two teething problems at their new ground. Moyes’ men rank 14th in the Premier League table, whereas only Arsenal and Manchester City have collected more points on the road than Everton.

Needless to say, the home team will be bang up for this one. And although they have been better away than at home this term, we expect Everton to get something here. Moyes will set them up to be hard to break down, and Liverpool have struggled against low blocks all season long.
