Tottenham Dealt Another Blow as Nightmare Run Continues

Tottenham Hotspur were so close to their first victory of 2026, but it was not to be. Leading Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in second-half stoppage time last weekend, Roberto De Zerbi’s side were on the brink of climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone. Then Georginio Rutter scored an equalizer for Brighton and three points became one in an instant.

It was a damaging result for Spurs, who remain in the drop zone with just five full rounds of fixtures remaining this term. The threat of relegation, which would be catastrophic for a member of the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’, looms large. De Zerbi was brought in as a final throw of the dice, but he has only managed to collect one point from a possible six so far.

Having said that, improvements were visible in the draw with Brighton. Unlike in many matches this term, Tottenham started well. They played on the front foot and scored two good goals, as well as creating several more chances. But they still conceded two goals and were twice unable to hold onto a lead.

De Zerbi tried to focus on the positives after the match. That is a sensible approach. The situation already feels desperate. Tottenham do not need their manager to add to the doom and gloom.

“I always thought and believed in the quality of the players. In this moment we need this spirit, this attitude, this mentality. It’s not finished yet,” he said.

“Every one of us knows it’s a tough moment, it’s a difficult situation. Now it’s difficult to hear my words. But if you watch the players, if you analyse the level of the players, I think we can win five games in a row. Not to be arrogant, because I’m not arrogant now, especially now. But we have the qualities enough to fight and to win games in a row.”

Wolves Waiting for Miserable Season to Come to an End

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will not look back on this season with any fond memories. It has been nothing short of a disastrous campaign for Wolves, for whom relegation was confirmed on Monday night. In truth, they have been as good as down for some time now. The problem is, there is no guarantee they will bounce straight back.

True, Southampton are looking good for promotion this term having finished bottom in 2024/25. But Leicester City are on their way to League One just 12 months after they finished below the dreaded dotted line in the Premier League. With a high player turnover likely at Molineux, it is hard to predict which outcome is more likely for Wolves.

Many of the away fans who watched last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Leeds United were visibly angry with the players after the final whistle. With the owners hugely unpopular, it will not be easy to unite everyone behind the team again. Rob Edwards has a big job on his hands.

Edwards oversaw a brief upturn a few weeks back, overseeing victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool. Wolves took just one point from the next nine available, but all three of those matches were away. The hope is that a return to Molineux on Saturday will bring about an improved display, but Wolves fans will not be holding their breath given how poor the side has been in their last couple of outings.

“We don't want it to happen, but the writing is on the wall, Edwards said of relegation after the defeat at Elland Road. “We have to continue trying to improve and there are things we are doing better, but we are where we are because of the mistakes. It is really important we fight in every single moment.”

Anything Less Than a Win for Tottenham Is Not Good Enough

Time is fast running out for Tottenham Hotspur. They cannot put their revival off any longer. “Must win” can be overused in the soccer world, but it is an accurate description of Saturday’s showdown for Spurs. Anything other than a triumph in the Black Country would leave them in a precarious position.

Tottenham have the quality in their roster to pick up all three points in this game, but the danger is that the mental strain proves too much. Thankfully, Wolves are ideal opponents. The Premier League table does not lie at this late stage of the campaign, and it shows that Wolves have been the worst team in the division this term.

Tottenham still need to take care of business. They must cut out the sloppy mistakes that have cost them too often in 2025/26. But if they can build on the positive elements of the Brighton display, the north Londoners can come out on top and keep their survival hopes alive.

West Ham United face Everton at the same time as this match, and Tottenham fans will no doubt have one eye on events at the London Stadium. The players, however, must focus on their own task. Do that and Tottenham should get the better of Wolves.
