Expert Betting Predictions and Best Bets for Argentina vs. Switzerland

Below you can find our expert betting predictions and best bets ahead of the pivotal World Cup quarterfinals clash between Argentina and Switzerland.

  • Lionel Messi 6+ Shots

Messi continues to be the hero for Argentina, scoring late goals and providing assists to help keep his team in the tournament. However, his impressive goalscoring record of eight in five games at this year’s World Cup means there’s very little value to be found in the goalscorer market. Instead, we’ve found a top value bet based on shots.

Leo has been averaging 6.37 shots per 90 at the tournament, and his high shooting volume extends to his most recent MLS season, averaging 6.08 per 90. The combination of a high historic shot rate and his impressive tally at the current World Cup shows how plus-money odds for Messi to have 6+ shots in this game is a good bet to make.

  • Ricardo Rodriguez To Commit 2+ Fouls

Experienced defender Rodriguez has committed 1.88 fouls per 90 through five matches at World Cup 2026. He’ll be up against some tricky opponents in this meeting. Messi started to drift out towards the right flank against Egypt to find pockets of space, and we can see the 39-year-old doing that once again here. Given Messi has won 2.85 fouls per 90 at the tournament, this appears to be a solid play if you can get plus-money odds.

Argentina Betting Preview

Lionel Scaloni’s men had to scrape past seemingly much weaker opposition in Cape Verde and Egypt in the Round of 32 and Round of 16, but mentality monsters Argentina have booked their place in the World Cup quarterfinals. They continue to battle through tight situations at major tournaments. That’s not by luck; that’s a testament to their elite mentality.

Messi proved that he is in fact human after missing his second penalty of the tournament in the first half against Egypt, failing to draw the scores level after Yasser Ibrahim had put the underdogs in front.

Nevertheless, Messi’s goal and assist once again proved how vital he is, bailing them out of what looked like an impossible situation at 2-0 down. It was Enzo Fernandez who scored the winner with a header in injury time, yet it is Messi who once again gets all the plaudits.

There’s an argument to be made that Argentina are yet to face quality opposition thus far. Nevertheless, they’ve reached the last eight, and Switzerland will pose as an incredibly difficult test and are worthy quarterfinal opponents.

Switzerland Betting Preview

Switzerland held their nerve to defeat Colombia on penalties in the Round of 16 to secure their place in the last eight for the first time since 1954, ending a run of three straight World Cup Round of 16 exits.

Having opened their World Cup campaign with a hugely disappointing 1-1 draw with Qatar, Switzerland has grown into the tournament, comfortably beating Bosnia & Herzegovina, Canada, and Algeria.

Yakin’s men did not look troubled as they defeated Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 thanks to goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye. The Red Crosses were locked at 0-0 with Colombia through 120 minutes in their last 16 tie, but managed to edge through for a meeting with the current world champions this Saturday.

The Swiss will be sweating over the fitness of breakout star Johan Manzambi. He was forced to miss the Colombia game due to a knee issue and remains a major doubt for this one. The 20-year-old has had a fine World Cup campaign, scoring three goals and registering two assists.

How Argentina and Switzerland Match Up Against Each Other

Egypt proved that Argentina can be contained for large parts of the game. They did well at blocking out the central areas and limiting the combinations and intricate play in and around the box. However, it was the elite quality of Messi that ultimately got La Albiceleste back into the game.

Scaloni’s side typically tends to avoid attacking the flanks. However, they actually scored from two crosses against the Pharaohs. That could be a tactic employed once again against a defensively stern Switzerland side, with Messi drifting out towards the right flank to find less crowded areas.

The Swiss will take positives from Argentina’s vulnerabilities in transition against Egypt, and will feel they can go direct when the opportunities arise. Hossam Hassan’s men managed to break away several times on the counter. They had one counterattacking goal ruled out due to a foul on Lisandro Martinez, but they eventually doubled their lead following a rapid transition move led by Mohamed Salah that was finished off by Zico.

In Embolo, Ndoye, and Ruben Vargas, Switzerland has the tools to hurt Argentina on the counter, in 1v1 situations out wide, and by finding space in behind. Manzambi is a powerhouse and has excellent ball-carrying skills to hurt La Albiceleste as well, so it will be a huge boost if he can recover in time.

These two nations last met at the 2014 World Cup. Argentina needed extra time to get past Switzerland, earning a narrow 1-0 win in the 118th minute thanks to Angel Di Maria to advance to the quarterfinals. We’re expecting another close encounter in this one.
