Spain vs. Cape Verde: BTTS No (-220) at BetMGM

We begin our soccer BTTS predictions today with a look at the pre-tournament favorite Spain. La Roja is the reigning European champion and arrives at the World Cup with one of the strongest squads on the planet. Its opening game gives Spain the chance to ease its way into the competition, as Cape Verde will struggle to cause Luis de la Fuente’s side too many problems.

Cape Verde is one of four debutants at this World Cup. It did not qualify for the 24-team Africa Cup of Nations in 2025, yet it claimed one of the continent’s nine automatic qualification berths for the World Cup, finishing ahead of Cameroon in its group. It will not have much possession against Spain, so the game plan will be to sit deep and spring forward at speed on the break.

That will not necessarily be enough to unsettle the European champions. In its qualifying group, Spain conceded just two goals in six matches. In its last 10 games, Spain has kept seven clean sheets. In today’s first World Cup match, go for BTTS no at -220 with BetMGM.

Belgium vs. Egypt: BTTS Yes (-105) at BetMGM

Bronze medallist at World Cup 2018, Belgium crashed out in the group stage four years ago. It has gone under the radar in the build-up to this summer’s event, but a reasonably kind draw means Belgians are cautiously optimistic for what lies ahead. However, a clean sheet against Egypt will probably be out of reach, even though Belgium is itself likely to score.

Rudi Garcia’s team is better going forward than it is defensively. Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, stalwarts of the country’s golden generation, are still around. Jeremy Doku, one of the most thrilling players in the English Premier League, will be a thorn in Egypt’s side throughout this game. Belgium has the firepower to score at least once today.

The worry is at the other end of the field. Belgium has not found replacements of the same quality for the likes of Vincent Kompany, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. Thibaut Courtois is a world-class goalkeeper, but the backline in front of him will be an issue against Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.

Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay: BTTS Yes (+125) at BetMGM

Uruguay is one of the World Cup’s great historic overachievers, but all is not well ahead of this tournament. The manager Marcelo Bielsa is said to be unpopular with numerous members of the locker room, and the team has not been in particularly good form over the last 12 months. 

The saving grace for Uruguay is that its group is relatively weak, but there is reason to believe Saudi Arabia will make the net bulge when it faces the two-time world champions today. The Saudis memorably beat Argentina at World Cup 2022. It has been steadily improving in recent years. In its last four matches, it has failed to score only once.

Uruguay is traditionally a solid, combative side which knows how to grind out results. We conclude today’s Both Teams to Score tips with Iran vs New Zealand, where we do not anticipate there being goals at both ends. In fact, it is tempting to bet on a 0-0 draw in today’s final match. This is unlikely to be a thrilling encounter between two teams which lack quality in the final third.

Start with Iran. Its preparations for this tournament have been chaotic, and it looks like the team will only be permitted to enter the USA shortly before this match gets under way. Needless to say, that is not the ideal way to get ready for a World Cup game. Even without such obstacles, Iran has failed to find the net in two of its last four matches. It is not a free-flowing attacking team.

The same is true of New Zealand, at least against opponents of a similar or better standard. Oceania now has one guaranteed place at each World Cup, so we will see the All Whites appear every four years.
