Expert Betting Predictions and Best Bets for England vs. Argentina

Below are our three top tips for England vs. Argentina, including two straight bets and one same game parlay.

  • England to score first

England did not get out of the blocks quickly in the quarter-final against Norway, conceding the opening goal before coming back to win 2-1. Argentina, on the other hand, opened the scoring against Switzerland through Alexis Mac Allister. However, we anticipate the roles being reversed in this semi-final. Argentina looked tired at the end of the Switzerland game, with two of its three knockout games having gone to extra time, and a fast start from Thomas Tuchel’s side would put the trophy holder on the back foot. England is our pick to draw first blood.

  • Both teams to score

It is hard to envisage either team keeping a clean sheet in this one. England and Argentina are both better going forward than they are defensively. England’s offense is built around Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, while Argentina will look to inspiration in the final third from Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez. When the stakes are high, we often see cautious games of soccer. But bear in mind that both teams have scored in all six of the knockout ties involving England or Argentina so far this summer.

  • England to win and Jude Bellingham to score anytime

This is a tough game to call, but England is right to be narrow favorites with the best online sportsbooks. Argentina was one of only three teams (alongside Mexico and France) to win all three group games, but it has been much more unconvincing in the knockout rounds, only just getting past Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland by a one-goal margin on each occasion. If England does triumph, Jude Bellingham will be key. He is having a magnificent tournament and can strike for the seventh time in the semi-final.

England Betting Preview

England has had a mixed campaign to date. There have been good performances, namely those against Croatia and Mexico, as well as mediocre displays in which the team was rescued by a star player, such as the 2-1 victories over DR Congo and Norway. In the first of those matches, Harry Kane was England’s hero. In the second, Jude Bellingham made the difference.

There is no doubt that Kane and Bellingham are England’s two best players, and it is hard to see it winning the World Cup unless that offensive pair continues to shine. Thomas Tuchel left some big-name attacking players at home this summer, most notably Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, because he wanted to build the side around Kane and Bellingham. That decision has been vindicated over the last few weeks.

England was not at its best in the defeat of Norway last time out. It was the better team in the sweltering Miami humidity in the first quarter of the quarter-final, but Norway then took over and went 1-0 up. Bellingham equalized just before half-time, but England found itself on the back foot after the break. In extra time, it came on strong again, with Bellingham scoring the winner after Morgan Rogers’ shot was spilled by the Norway goalkeeper.

Argentina Betting Preview

Argentina won the World Cup four years ago and has also been crowned champion in the last two editions of the Copa America. Lionel Scaloni and his players have got used to that winning feeling and they are desperate to experience it once again on soccer’s biggest stage. However, Argentina is only the fourth-favorite to lift the trophy going into the semi-finals.

It is hard to shake the sense that the three-time world champion might have peaked in the group phase. Argentina was given a huge scare against Cape Verde in the round of 32, eventually triumphing 3-2 after extra time. The South American side was almost eliminated in the last 16, coming from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 in dramatic fashion. And against Switzerland last time out, Argentina was on the back foot until its opponent had a player sent off.

It would be a mistake to write Argentina off, though. In Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi, it has two match-winners up front. Its midfield four is capable of playing some wonderful passing soccer, and its spirit and mentality cannot be questioned. But this is its biggest challenge of the tournament to date.

How England and Argentina Match Up Against Each Other

England will use its customary 4-2-3-1 formation. Declan Rice has been struggling with injury and illness this summer, but he is expected to start in midfield after shaking off the virus that forced him off against Norway. Jude Bellingham will continue in the No.10 role, with Bukayo Saka set to replace Noni Madueke on the right wing. Harry Kane will lead the line once more.

Argentina will continue with its 4-4-2 diamond system. Lionel Messi will not do much running off the ball, instead conserving his energy for when it really matters. Julian Alvarez will work harder, while the midfield four will look to stay close together to dominate possession. Center-backs Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero will be aggressive towards Kane and Bellingham.

This game could be decided down the flanks. Argentina is a narrow team, so England wingers Saka and Anthony Gordon will stretch the play and look to attack quickly down the sides. If England wins, it will be because it has success out wide.
