Kalshi Surprises Users With Launch of Customizable Parlays
Kalshi customers found a surprising new offering for last night’s Monday Night Football games.
The sports prediction market leader quietly launched a new parlay feature, which went live before last night’s games. It allowed customers to create multiple-leg parlays for longer odds.
The launch was not announced or advertised, which stunned many around the prediction market and sports betting industries.
While the details around Kalshi’s parlay feature remain largely unknown, we do know that customers are essentially betting against the house. While standard transactions on Kalshi allow customers to compete against the market, it makes it impossible to create customizable parlays.
Kalshi’s move makes it the first sports prediction market operator to offer parlays. However, there are many questions about how they managed to do it. With Kalshi required to set its own odds for parlays, it would have needed a partner to do so. However, US law would have prevented them from doing so, given the lack of announcement regarding the loss.
Now, Kalshi will need to answer questions about how the new offering works and where the odds are coming from.
Launch Could Show Kalshi’s Confidence Is Slipping
As of the time of this writing, questions continue to swirl around Kalshi’s unadvertised launch. We expect the operator to claim the launch was a sort of beta test that would allow for changes to be made before advertising the new offering.
However, the story may be more complex than that.
As confident as Kalshi has been in its legal fights against states and tribes, the momentum has begun to shift against it. This has led to a larger effort to gain public support, issuing grandiose warnings about the company’s importance to the US and world economy.
Those legal woes may have influenced the company to abandon its usual brazen advertising. Not only is the term "parlay" well-known in sports betting, but the lack of peer-to-peer wagering may also threaten the argument that sports prediction markets are a form of sports betting. It’s possible that Kalshi decided to play safer with parlays, which could make their legal battles even more challenging.
