Coming second in a competition is always heartbreaking, but to come second twice is agonizing. Perth Scorchers will now know the feeling well, as they have come second-best in Big Bash League not twice, but on three occasions.
What they will do in the upcoming stages of this season remains to be seen, but given how they have played so far, it will be a fair assessment to say that they are by far the most formidable side of BBL 2021-22. Ashton Turner’s boys have won ten of their twelve outings.
Perth’s next assignment is against a team that are currently placed in the playoff zone but have three teams breathing down their neck – Adelaide Strikers. They have won only three of their eleven matches, but a convincing 71-run triumph in their last match against Adelaide Strikers would have done their confidence a world of good.
Adelaide Strikers will be forced to make at least one change to their playing XI. Afghan spin sensation Rashid Khan has left for national commitments and he is expected to be replaced by Fawad Ahmed. Harry Conway could make way for Wes Agar after going wicketless in the last match, while even though Henry Hunt scored 25 runs against Brisbane Heat, his strike rate of under 100 might tempt the Adelaide management to ponder other options. If they do want to change their opening combination, Ryan Gibson could replace Hunt.
Perth Scorchers, on the other hand, do not need to make any changes to their playing XI. Peter Hatzoglou did not have a particularly good game last time out against Melbourne Stars, but he usually is a very reliable customer and is expected to feature in the team for this match.
Andrew Tye: Andrew Tye could not have picked a better time to find his peak – a month before the Indian Premier League mega auction. He has been in sensational form with the ball and is currently Perth Scorchers’ leading wicket-taker, with 19 scalps to his name. Tye has picked up a couple of three-wicket hauls – against Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers.
Peter Siddle: Like Scorchers, the Strikers will also be relying on their bowling contingent to deliver the goods, and whilst the trump card called Rashid Khan is not available to skipper Peter Siddle anymore, he himself could become his team’s trump card in the Afghan’s absence. The 37-year-old has picked up 18 wickets in his 11 matches, which includes a five-wicket haul against Hobart Hurricanes.
