Sussex holds the upper hand in terms of head-to-head records, as they have won 17 of the 30 meetings against Essex, with the Eagles having the last laugh on 13 occasions. However, given the disparity in recent form between these two teams, we have predicted Essex to emerge victoriously in this fixture.
Essex: William Buttleman/Adam Rossington (wk), Feroze Khushi, Michael-Kyle Pepper, Matthew Critchley, Paul Walter, Tom Westley, Simon Harmer (c), Aron Nijjar, Jamal Richards/Shane Snater, Ben Allison, Samuel Cook
Sussex: Tim Seifert (wk), Ravi Bopara (c), Tom Alsop, Alistair Orr/Delray Rawlins, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Oliver Carter, Harrison Ward, Obed McCoy, Tymal Mills, Henry Cracombe/Archie Lenham, Steven Finn
Essex will take on Sussex in the upcoming South Group match of the T20 Blast 2022, on Friday, 17th June. This match will be played at the County Ground in Chelmsford.
Essex have not been very consistent in the ongoing edition of the T20 Blast, but they have just about done enough to be placed third in their group. Simon Harmer’s men won two and lost as many of their first four matches, while their performances have been slightly better in the last four matches. Though Essex have won two of those games as well, they have lost only one game with the other match being abandoned.
On the other hand, Sussex had a poor start to their campaign as they lost their first couple of matches, but three consecutive wins helped them climb up the points table. However, things have gone downhill ever since, as Ravi Bopara’s team will come into this match on the back of three back-to-back defeats – against Hampshire, Surrey and Gloucestershire.
Though they won their previous game against Middlesex, Essex could opt to make a couple of changes to their playing XI. Wicket-keeper batter Adam Rossington had yet another poor outing, scoring only 9 runs from 13 deliveries. Overall, he has scored only 86 runs in seven matches at an average of 12.28, and hence, he could be replaced by William Buttleman.
Besides that, we could also see a change in the bowling department. In the two matches that he has played so far, Shane Snater has not picked up any wickets and has also conceded nearly 12 runs per over. He could make way for Jamal Richards in this match.
On the other hand, we could expect to see a couple of changes in the Sussex team as well. Delray Rawlins scored only 5 runs in the last match, while as for his overall statistics, he has scored only 91 runs at a subpar average of 11.37. He might have to make way for Alistair Orr in this match.
Besides that, Archie Lenham is another player who has not lived up to the expectations as despite playing eight games, he only has a solitary wicket to his name. In his place, Henry Cracombe could be given a chance in this fixture.
Matt Critchley: All-rounder Matt Critchley has been a reliable performer for Essex with both the bat and the ball. He is his team’s leading run-scorer, having scored 194 runs at an average of 38.80 and a strike rate of 144.77. Besides that, he also has been handy with his leg-spin, having picked up 12 wickets at an average of only 12.66 and an equally impressive economy rate of 6.16 runs per over. In his last two matches against Middlesex and Hampshire, Critchley has scalped six wickets.
Obed McCoy: After an impressive 2022 Indian Premier League campaign for Rajasthan Royals, Obed MCoy is now proving his mettle in the T20 Blast. He is currently leading the wicket-taking charts for his team, having picked up 14 wickets in only five matches. The Caribbean pacer picked up a five-wicket haul against Somerset and a four-wicket haul against Middlesex.
