Club America vs Monterrey Predictions

This should be a cracking contest. Club America have been the most consistent league side for half a decade, and Monterrey have been the best side in the league this season. Heavyweight matches like this set the tone for the rest of the season, and neither team will want to lose this one.

Club America are the home side and have the odds in their favor, but we think Monterrey might be too strong for them. Club America drew last week against a strong Leon side, but they were second-best for most of the game.

Monterrey are a much stronger side than Leon and won’t do Club America any favors. The league leaders have conceded just nine goals all season and scored 27. The rewards for picking Monterrey are also great, so it’s best to stick with this season’s top team.

Previous Meetings

The last match between the two sides didn’t disappoint, and Liga MX fans will be hoping for more of the same this time around. Monterrey won 3-2 when the two sides met in July 2022 in one of the best games of last season.

Monterrey’s Stefan Medina opened the scoring in the ninth minute but Club America ended the first-half with a 2-1 lead thanks to strikes from Jonathan Rodriguez and Alejandro Zendejas. Club America had 65% of the possession in this match and looked comfortable heading into the second half but Maximiliano Meza’s 66th-minute strike changed the trajectory of the game.

Monterrey got the momentum and capitalized on it eight minutes later to take the lead. Rodrigo Aguirre was the hero and earned Monterrey all three points. This game took place a bit early in the season, and didn’t really influence much later in the season.

The upcoming game; however, is a different story. There will be a lot of pride on the line, and the game will feel like a precursor to the playoffs. Club America have the better overall record with 13 wins, seven draws, and nine wins, but this match feels like Monterrey’s to lose.

Club America Concede Late in 2-2 Draw Against Leon

Club America conceded a goal four minutes into second-half stoppage time to Leon over the weekend, which prevented them from climbing into second place on the Liga MX table. They can’t have too many complaints, however, because Leon were thoroughly deserving of their late equalizer.

Club America went down a goal just before half time, but headed into the second-half with a strong response. Diego Valdes Contreras and Henry Martin got onto the scoresheet in the 63rd and 68th minute to give Club America the lead for the first time in the game, but the home side couldn’t kill the game.

Club America took just nine shots in the game compared to Leon’s 21, which was a bit worrying. Club America weren’t their free-scoring selves in this tie but they showed their clinical edge. There were a few positives in this tie but the defense was a big worry once again.

Club America Haven’t Been Their Usual Selves This Season

Club America have set really high standards in recent years. Even though their last Liga MX title came in 2018, they’ve been the most consistent league side in the years since that triumph. By their usual standards, this league season has been a bit of a disappointment.

They’ve conceded far too many goals. They’ve lost just one game but drawn six, which is a bit too much for a side expected to win the league or make it to the final four at the very least. No team has scored more goals in the league than Club America, but this has more to do with the quality in the final third.

Their last league game against Leon was a good example of how reliant they’ve been on the quality of their players; they didn’t create a lot of chances but scored two. There are some positives to that but they can’t sustain good results for long periods by just depending on the quality of their players.

It seems like this iteration of the team is at the end of a cycle, and some new faces need to join the camp.

Monterrey Were in Top Form Once Again

There’s just no stopping Monterrey this season. They put in another stunning display in a 4-0 win over Club Tijuana over the weekend. Rodrigo Aguirre and German Betramme got a brace each to take Monterrey nine points clear of second-placed Toluca.

Monterrey were dominant from the very start. Aguirre’s opener came in the fifth minute, and he made it 2-0 within the 22nd minute. Betramme joined the party 10 minutes later before getting his second of the day in the 76th minute.

Monterrey were thoroughly deserving of the victory and never really looked phased. Club Tijunan took just five shots all game, whereas Monterrey took 20, with 10 on target.

Monterrey Have to Put Down Another Marker

Monterrey’s win over Pachuca a few weeks ago was a big win because of the events from last season. Pachuca embarrassed Monterrey in the semifinals with a 6-2 win on aggregate, but by beating Pachuca this season, Monterrey got that monkey off their back. They don’t have to fear Pachuca for the rest of the season.

If they can beat Club America in this match, it’ll be another step in the right direction. Club America haven’t played like the team from recent years, and Monterrey have an excellent opportunity to show their superiority in this match. There’s no place to make a statement like the Azteca. A win here will not only cement them as the best league side in the country; it’ll also allow them to head into the playoffs with the belief that they can go all the way.
