Cruz Azul have had the upper hand in their matches against Club Leon, and that domination should continue. They have won four of the last five meetings in the league, including a 2-1 win earlier this season.
When the two sides met last month, Cruz Azul fell behind just before the hour mark after an own goal from Rodrigo Huescas. Luckily, that did not come back to haunt them as Michael Estrada and Alonso Escoboza scored late in the game to help them get a 2-1 win.
Cruz Azul will remain the favorites to win once again this week and should manage to get it with a better scoreline. They are the only team in the league to win their last three matches, and thus, the momentum will be on their side.
Cruz Azul were struggling in the league this season and were not touted to make the playoffs at the end. They had won just three of their opening 13 matches and had collected 12 points.
They were slowly recovering from the 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Club America when Monterry handed them a 3-2 defeat. However, they managed to pull their socks and work hard on the pitch to go on a winning run and seal the playoff spot.
Looking to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Monterrey, Cruz Azul were hosting Mazatlan in the league. The game at Estadio Azteca saw the home side take a 2-0 lead in the first half and hold on to their lead until the end of the match.
Gonzalo Carneiro scored the opening goal of the match for Azul in the 21st minute to hand them the lead. The home side were gifted a penalty right at the end of the first half, and Angel Romero made no mistake from the spot.
Raul Erasto Gutierrez Jacobo’s side faced Club Leon next in the league and had to work hard for the win. Despite dominating possession and shots, they had to get past a resilient defense, who were handed a boost by Rodrigo Huescas’s own goal at the other end.
Luckily for the home side, Michael Estrada and Alonso Escoboza, who came on as substitutes in the second half, scored at the very end to get a 2-1 win.
Rodrigo Huescas scored at the right end in the next match to make amends for his error in the game against Club Leon. His goal in the 26th minute handed Azul the lead at Pumas UNAM, and Gonzalo Carneiro doubled it right before halftime. Diogo pulled one back for the home side, but that was not enough to spark a comeback despite having 25 minutes to find another goal.
Azul finished the league season on a high thanks to Michael Estrada finding the back of the net late in the game once again. He scored the winner in the 93rd minute against Guadalajara after Sergio Flores’s goal in the 68th minute canceled out Uriel Antuna’s opener for Azul in the first half.
Cruz Azul defeated Club Leon in the league last month after a late comeback in the game. An own goal saw them go behind early in the second half, but two goals in the final 12 minutes saw them clinch a 2-1 win.
Estrada scored the equalizer with 8 minutes left on the clock to give the home side hope to go for the winner. They dominated the game despite their own goal and let the away side take just one shot on target.
Escoboza scored deep into stoppage time to seal the win and help them jump up in the league table. Both players had come on as substitutes in the match and ensured their side got the win.
Club Leon’s main issue in the league this season has been their inconsistency. They have not managed to get more than two wins in a row, while they did have a 4-match losing streak.
They had started the season well and were unbeaten in their first four matches. A win at Atletico de San Luis kicked off their campaign, while draws against Pumas UNAM, Puebla, and Guadalajara followed.
Club Leon’s poor run in the league started after their win over Club America in gameweek six. They had collected 9 points from the first six games but then went on a four-match losing streak.
Monterrey, Mazatlan, Santos Laguna, and Pachuca handed them defeats, leaving them with nine points from 10 matches.
Their losing streak ended with a win over defending champions Atlas at home. However, they could not carry the momentum into the next match and were beaten 3-2 by Club Necaxa.
1-0 wins over Juarez and Tigres UNAL followed for Club Leon, and they were without touching distance of sealing a place in the playoffs. Once again, it was their inconsistency that troubled them as they were beaten by Cruz Azul, the side they face once again this week.
Luckily, Leon managed to do well in the last two matches and finish 10th in the league. They defeated Queretaro in the penultimate gameweek, and then helped Club Tijuana to a 2-2 draw in the final game of the league phase.
Lucas Di Yorio has been their best player this season, with 8 goals and 2 assists in the league. He scored twice and assisted once in the last two matches of the season, and they would need him to be at his best if they are to get a result against Cruz Azul.
Club Leon’s last win over Cruz Azul was in last year’s Apertura. Once again, it was an own goal that helped them get the lead in the match, with José Rivero at fault this time. The left-back’s error right after the half-hour mark was enough for the away side to steal all three points, despite doing poorly in the game.
Leon had managed just one shot on target in the match, compared to 5 of Cruz Azul, but still created more big chances than their opponents. The away side’s goalkeeper, Rodolfo Cota, was their hero on the pitch as he had five crucial saves in the match.
