Despite going down to 10 men, Cruz Azul drew with Puebla when the two sides met back in September during the Apertura season. Yoshimar Yotún was sent off early in the second half, but they managed to hold on to the 1-1 scoreline and take a point away from the game.
While a similar result is being predicted by the fans, Puebla will be determined to take all three points and keep their fairytale run going. They have a chance to move back to the top of the table as the teams right above and below them clash this weekend.
Four of the last five matches between these two sides have ended in a 1-1 draw, while Puebla picked up a 1-0 win at Estadio Azteca in January last year.
Cruz Azul started the season half of the season well but have slipped up in the last two games. They sit 4th in the table right at the moment, with 14 points from their opening 8 matches. With just nine games left this season, they need to pick-up points every weekend from here on to keep their charge for the title going.
They drew with Tigres this week after a dramatic injury-time goal by Ignacio Rivero. Despite trailing 2-0 early in the game, Juan Reynoso’s men made sure that they were on hand to attack at all opportunities. They scored in the added time of both halves to leave with a point.
They can get level on points with Tigres with a win this weekend if Tigres lose to table-toppers Pachuca; should it play out that way, Reynoso’s men will be right back in pole position for a top 3 finish.
However, they aren’t currently in good form at the Estadio Azteca, where they have lost 2 of their last 3 games in all competitions. They lost to Santos Laguna and Club Necaxa in the league, but did manage to beat Forge FC easily in the CONCACAF Champions League. Check out more International Soccer matches here.
Reynoso will be looking for a better performance this season in the Clausura after failing to retain their crown in the Apertura last time round, as they finished 8th in the league with just five wins from their 17 matches. They only lost four times, but the eight draws cost them a top 4 finish, as they finished 5 points behind Tigres.
With table-toppers Pachuca taking on 3rd place Tigres, Puebla has a great chance to make it back to the top of the table. The two sides are expected to battle for a draw in that fixture, leaving Puebla a chance to potentially go a point clear at the top.
They are up against Cruz Azul, who are not in great form. The home side is low on confidence after losing two of their last three home games and picking up just one point from their previous two league games. But Puebla cannot afford to take them lightly, as Tigres learned the hard way this week.
Puebla are the only side unbeaten in the league since the start of the Clausura season. They have won 5 of their 8 matches so far and will be keen on keeping their excellent run going.
Goalkeeper Antony Silva – the 37-year-old, who is as old as his manager – has been their best player this season. Puebla have also been among the better teams in front of goal this season, with Maximiliano Araujo, Guillermo Martinez, and Fernando Aristeguieta scoring two goals each so far out of Puebla’s 14.
The bedrock of Puebla’s success, however, has been their defense this season, which has conceded only 6 goals from 8 games, a tally only one other team has been able to match so far. Check out our soccer betting guides here to get an edge before the game!
