The two sides head into this match with only three points separating them but the form couldn’t be more different for the two sides heading into this tie. Puebla have remarkably drawn their last eight matches, which is quite simply unheard of, and Guadalajara have won three of their last five, which includes two draws.
The former are currently in ninth place on the Liga MX table while the latter is in seventh place. Both will see this match as a great way to get closer to elite company.
The two sides also head into this match on an unbeaten run but with very different momentum. History favors Puebla, who enjoy a great head-to-head record with two wins, one loss and three draws. One thing that can be said of Puebla is that they’re hard to beat but this run of draws certainly can’t last forever and should be broken at some point.
The next game might well be the game where they do and Guadalajara will be confident that they can be the team to just that.
The last match between these two sides was a thrilling 3-2 win for Puebla, which took place back in February. This was quite an even game with the teams having an even share of the ball. There wasn’t a lot between the two sides in terms of shots on goal either with Guadalajara taking 15 with six of them on target and Puebla taking 14 shots with five of them on target.
Miguel Ángel Ponce and Alexis Vega gave Guadalajara the lead with two goals before the half and should’ve held on but Puebla led a great comeback thanks to goals from Fernando Aristeguieta, Jordi Cortizo and Guillermo Martínez. Liga MX fans will be hoping for more of the same in the upcoming game between the two sides. The fans of the two sides will be hoping for something less dramatic, of course.
Guadalajara left with all three points in the win against Club Tijuana with a scoreline of 2-1 in their favor. Roberto Alvarado gave Guadalajara the lead in the 47th minute but Club Tijuana got one back 11 minutes later thanks to Franco di Santo. Guadalajara held their nerve and Luis Olivas scored the winner to take them up to seventh on the Liga MX table and keep the good run going.
As was evidenced in the game against Club Tijuana, Guadalajara have tightened even further at the back in recent weeks. They have only conceded three goals in their last six matches, which bodes well for this game and going forward. No team will enjoy playing them and they’ve not got the hard-to-beat reputation, which should give them a psychological edge heading into most games in the Liga MX.
Every great team builds from its backline and this will help Guadalajara going forward. The last meeting between these two sides ended with Puebla making an incredible comeback but if Guadalajara continue defending as they have in the last few weeks, it’s hard to see Puebla breaking them like that this time around.
Their nine goals conceded is the best defensive record in the league so far. If they can get a little more from the attack, they should be a real force for the rest of the season.
Alexis Vega has been the star man for Guadalajara with five goals and four assists in 14 matches. He’s providing an attacking contribution every alternate game and as long as he’s fit, Guadalajara will have a chance to win games against any opposition. With the team mostly depending on their defense in recent games, the attacking burden has weighed heavily on him but he’s taken up that challenge and will be expected to contribute in some manner against Puebla as well.
Roberto Alvarado hasn’t been too bad either with three goals and four assists so far this season from 16 matches. Puebla will have their hands full with the creative and goal scoring threat that the two provide.
Puebla drew 2-2 against fourth placed Pachuca in their last Liga MX match. Puebla had to weather a storm with only 39% of the possession and conceding 24 attempts on goal with 11 on target. However, they’ll be disappointed to have not got all three points because they’d taken a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jordi Cortizo in the 17th minute and Martín Barragán in the 52nd minute. Fans were dreaming of a long-awaited dream but it had to be cut short once again.
They couldn’t reign in Pachuca’s attack in the end who started their comeback in the 78th minute thanks to a Nicolas Ibanez strike and got the crucial equalizer in the 90th minute from Miguel Tapias. It was yet another eventful but frustrating game for Puebla but another lesson. It’s a 90 minute game and there’s no time for admiring a lead.
Eight draws in a row is far too unusual and the fans will start believing that there’s some external factor against them but the manager and players can’t think like that. It’s just the way things are currently going for Puebla but they can’t let that affect them and have to look forward.
They haven’t been beaten in away matches in their last four, so there’s certainly some resilience in this side but they also haven’t won their last six away matches. It’s hard to see them leave the upcoming match with a victory under the belt, especially with Guadalajara in the sort of form they’re currently in.
Draws might give the impression that Puebla matches are boring but they’re anything but that. They’ve scored 20 goals in this campaign, the fourth highest in the league and have Fernando Aristeguieta to thank for that, having scored six of them.
The problem is that they’ve also conceded 18, which makes for highly entertaining ties but not a lot of points. Matches Puebla take part in average 3.67 goals per game. That might not be the case with this match because of how tight Guadalajara’s defense has been this season but the last match between these sides was a 3-2 thriller in Puebla’s favor.
It’s hard to see them getting all three points in this. You can certainly expect them to score one goal but with Guadalajara in form and playing at home, it feels like the run of draws will finally come to an end here and not for the better.
George Corral will be out with surgery.
