Despite losing six of their last seven Liga MX games, Juarez have a chance to qualify for the playoffs this season. However, inconsistency has left no room for positive momentum. Their only win during this tumultuous run came against San Luis over a week ago.
Queretaro’s recent form is quite similar, as the club has won just one game out in their last six attempts. They managed to get a point against Champions League winners Club Leon and nabbed a crucial win against Club Tijuana almost two weeks ago.
Regarding playoff qualification, this is a do-or-die encounter for Queretaro, who are dangling in 17th place. On the other hand, Juarez are in 12th and just one point outside the qualification zone. In the final two games, Juarez are expected to bring their A-game to the pitch and secure playoff qualification with two back-to-back positive results.
This will only be the eighth Liga MX encounter between the two sides. Juarez has an abysmal record in this fixture, as the club has just won once. Queretaro has clinched three victories, and the other three games have ended in draws.
Rodrigo Lopez scored in the first minute when these two teams met in the 2023 Clausura season. Parity was restored via Maximiliano Olivera’s 59th-minute strike. Jordan Sierra turned the game on its head in the 69th minute before Pablo Barrera’s 86th-minute penalty ensured a stalemate.
Juarez’s only win in this fixture came in the 2020 Apertura season at home. Dario Lezcano scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute, just four minutes after the hosts were reduced to ten men after Jose Esquivel was shown a straight red.
Juarez are one of four top-division Mexican clubs that have never won the Liga MX. However, the statistic has not discouraged the team from fighting for a playoff spot this season, as Juarez are only a point outside the qualification zone.
If the hosts can capitalize on the vulnerabilities of their next opponents and secure a positive result against Club Leon on the final matchday of the regular season, they can reach the playoffs. The knockout voyage may be short, but reaching that stage will be pivotal for the side.
A good attack helps a team win games, but a good defense helps a team win titles. Juarez are struggling in both departments, but the latter is in worse condition.
The club has failed to keep a clean sheet in the last 27 games in all competitions. This includes three 2023 Leagues Cup matches and 24 Liga MX games.
Compared to the previous season, Juarez’s home form has been marginally better in the current Apertura season after losing two out of seven games this season.
Aviles Hurtado has been a pivotal player for the hosts this season with six goals and three assists in 14 appearances, and he is expected to provide the much-needed spark in the last two games.
If Juarez squanders the opportunity to get all three points, they might still have a chance on the final matchday of the regular season, but for Queretaro, this match is a must-win if the club wants to make a playoff appearance in this Apertura campaign.
As things stand, they are four points off the final qualifying spot. If they fail to win against Juarez, that gap will remain as is or be extended beyond four points, automatically eliminating Queretaro from the playoff pursuit.
Clubs often prefer playing games at their home stadiums, but Queretaro have enjoyed more success on the road this Apertura season.
At home, the side has won just one out of seven games so far. However, on the road, they have registered three wins in eight games, picking up nine points.
Since the departure of star striker Angel Sepulveda in August this year, Queretaro have struggled in the final third.
The goals are drying up as the on-loan replacement of Sepulveda, Nicolas Cordero, has only scored one goal in eight appearances.
