Monterrey will be aiming to get out of the level of mediocrity they have found themselves in over the last few seasons. Monterrey finished the Clausura phase of the previous season in seventh place with seven wins. But that will not be enough against this Club America team.
Club America have maintained their level through the last few seasons, an indicator that they are a reliable, consistent team, capable of producing on the big stage when required. They even finished the Clausura phase at fourth with seven wins in 17 matches.
Monterrey and Club America should play out quite a tight contest in this one. Club America are the better team on paper but Monterrey have enough strength across the board to at least compete. That could result in a stalemate that eventually results in a draw.
Check out our guide to how to bet on soccer – we think you will find it useful.
Monterrey were winning their season opener before a sensational finish saw Santos Laguna eventually come away with a 4-3 win in the first round. Monterrey were 3-2 up with five minutes to go in normal time before two goals in the final few minutes consigned Monterrey to yet another loss as their poor form in the Liga MX continued.
It was particularly annoying for Monterrey because they actually played quite well through that match. Monterrey had 17 shots, of which eight were on target. They even had 52 percent of the possession, and completed 293 passes at a pass accuracy of 68 percent. Santos Laguna also played well across the phases but the lack of efficiency in passing across both teams was an indicator that it was a low quality contest.
For Monterrey, they will be reliant on Rogelio Funes Mori. He scored a brace in the first round with goals in the 17th minute and the 67th minute. The second of those goals was from the penalty spot. Rodrigo Aguirre scored the other goal for Monterrey, in the 21st minute. Monterrey will need to redeem themselves in the second round but that will not be forthcoming against a strong Club America team.
Club America were held to a goalless draw in their season opener against Atlas as they were unable to break the deadlock after a match, which involved a high level of passing efficiency. Club America won’t be too displeased with that result (even though it was at home) considering Atlas’ proficiency and depth of personnel.
Club America had 55 percent of the possession in that match, with 439 completed passes at a pass accuracy rate of 82. They had a total of 16 shots, of which three were on target. Club America can be a team that can play either way: move the ball quickly on the counter attack or even hold the ball and move slowly into the final third.
Either way, they have made a solid start defensively with a clean sheet against one of the better teams in the league (Atlas finished above them, at third in the Liga MX standings), which is why even a draw will give them a bit of confidence going into the second match of the season in the Mexican league.
For this market, we will have a look at some empirical evidence. There is not a large enough sample size of data from this season so far. Hence, we shall go back to the Clausura phase last season to analyse how the teams may perform in this one too.
Monterrey scored 21 goals at an average of well above one goal per game in Clausura. In the Apertura phase, they managed 19 goals. This tells us that, rather reliably, the team scores an average of one goal per game. This has been taken across both stages of the Liga MX and under different circumstances.
For Club America, they scored 21 goals in the Apertura as they finished at the top of the regular season standings there. In the Clausura, they were even better, with 24 goals scored. As with Monterrey, this suggests that the team scores well over one goal per game.
Now, onto defense. Club America conceded 17 goals at an average of one goal per game. Monterrey also conceded exactly the same number of goals (17) at the same average. This is evidence enough to suggest that there will be at least two goals scored. Based on probability, the likelihood for the over is quite high, which makes that a compelling selection.
