Santos Laguna vs Queretaro Prediction

Santos Laguna are still outside the playoff spots, but they have been in good form. They have lost just twice in their last 7 matches and will be keen on keeping their decent run going.

Queretaro have lost thrice in their last 5 matches and have picked up just one win. They are far off the playoff spots but can move within range with a win this weekend.

Santos Laguna have won 4 of their last meetings with Queretaro and will be keen on keeping that run going. They scored five goals the last time these two sides met at the Estadio TSM Corona, and a repeat of that could be on the offer – at least results-wise, if not the lopsided scoreline itself.

Santos Laguna Have Found Their Rhythm And Need To Continue

After a terrible start to the Clausura season, Santos Laguna have finally found their feet. They went winless in their opening six matches, but have bounced back with 4 wins in their last 7 games. The CONCACAF Champions League exit seems to have been a blessing in disguise for them, as they have managed to do well since CF Montreal knocked them out in February.

Their winless run ended at Cruz Azul at the end of February, thanks to an injury-time winner from Diego Medina. The goal came with the final kick of the game and has managed to turn things around for them. Harold Preciado opened the scoring for the visitors in the 5th minute, but it was  Carlos Acevedo saving Uriel Antuna’s penalty in the first half that boosted their confidence. José Rivero leveled things up for Azul, but they could not go on and get the second, and it cost them the three points.

Santos Laguna turned up the heat since that win and took the momentum into their next game as well. Pumas UNAM were up for the fight and took it on well, but Fernando Gorriarán and Harold Preciado scored within 8 minutes of each other in the second half to give them an unlikely 3-2 win. Juan Dinenno and Arturo Ortiz got Pumas level twice, but they could not find a third and lost the game.

Guadalajara ended Santos Laguna’s hopes of making it a hat-trick of wins by handing them a 1-0 loss. The game was a close one, but Santos couldn’t really complain about the result as they were outplayed in all departments. José Macías got the lone goal of the game just after the hour mark, and it was enough for them to collect the three points.

Santos were angry with the loss and took out their frustrations on Club Tijuana in the next game week. They produced their best performance this season and won 4-0 thanks to goals from Fernando Gorriarán, Leonardo Suárez, and Harold Preciado (2 goals). Tijuana tried a lot to get back into the game throughout the 90 minutes but were just unable to get behind the Santos defense.

Santos held title challengers Puebla in the next game and then won 3-1 against title favorites Pachuca to produce back-to-back shock results in the league. However, the 3-match unbeaten run was ended by Monterrey last week with a 1-0 loss despite Monterrey being down to 10 men in the 75h minute of the game.

At this point in the season, every team in the Liga MX has played 13 matches, and that gives a good indication of where things stand. Santos Laguna are placed 13th on the table, but are exactly 3 points behind 8th placed Toluca and 4 points behind 7th placed Leon. There is still time to just scrape into the playoffs, but they need wins in at least 3 of their last 4 games of the season to push for a top 8 spot – a much more substantial way of making sure they get into the playoffs.

Queretaro Are In A Must-Win Situation

With 4 games left in the season, Queretaro have a huge task on their hands. They are just 4 points below the playoff places – 16th with 12 points, 4 behind Tijuana – but need a miracle to get into the top 12.

They have been struggling all season and have just managed 2 wins so far. Hernan Cristante’s side must treat every match like a final if they are to have any chance of making it to the playoffs.

However, things have not been great in the last 5 matches. They have lost thrice and have picked up just 4 points in those matches. The playoffs look unlikely for them right now, and that could be a massive blow for them after missing out during the Apertura season as well.

The last three games have seen their opponents getting a red card, but Queretaro have managed to win just one of them. They were being held 1-1 by Atletico de San Luis when Ramón Juárez was given the marching orders after a second yellow card. Leonardo Sequeira made the most of his chance after finding the space and gave Queretaro a must-needed win.

Club Leon were up next for them, and they only managed to get a 1-1 draw. The coach Hernan Cristante was sent off early in the first half, but on the field Pablo Barrera managed to get them the lead.

It looked like they were ready to frustrate Leon and pick up the win, but Ángel Mena won a penalty and scored it with just over 20 minutes left in the game. They were unable to get another goal, but Santiago Ormeño got sent off right at the very end for a second yellow card, which helped Queretaro see out the game with a point intact.

Querétaro’s biggest regret this season, if they miss out on the playoffs by less than 3 points, would be the loss to Tigres last weekend. They were up against 10 men for over 55 minutes of the game as Hugo Ayala was sent off in the 36th minute for violent conduct.

Tigres still managed to get a goal from their new signing, Yeferson Soteldo, but the former Toronto FC star was sent off seconds later. The Venezuelan was already on a booking when he took off his shirt after the goal and received his second yellow card. Despite going down to 9 men, Tigres managed to hold on, get the three points, and move joint top of the table.
