Toluca and Juárez FC have met eight times in all competitions, and the away side have the head-to-head advantage. In the league, the away side have managed four wins in the six meetings so far.
While Juarez needed a win on the final day to get in, they were the side in better form when compared with Toluca. The home side did finish higher in the league table but have managed just one win in their last 8 matches.
Toluca are a side that loves to have ball possession in the match and complete quick passes to create spaces for the attackers to run into. On the other hand, Juarez like to sit back and attack the counter. They do not worry about being off the ball for an extended period in the game, as they are fine with the defense sitting deep.
Both sides do not have a good defense and have not kept a lot of clean sheets in the season. The home side have managed just two, while the away team had one more than their opponents this week.
The clash this week could see a lot of goals being scored as the defensive errors from both sides are high.
Toluca were the side to beat in the first half of the Apertura season, but their form dropped drastically in the second half. They had lost just once in their first nine matches of the season, but the tables turned, and they finished with just one win in their last eight games.
They now need to ensure that they put the league form behind them and forget about missing out on the automatic qualification for the quarterfinals. They were beaten to the 4th spot by Pachuca by 5 points in the end and had to settle for 6th place in the table, three points behind Tigres UANL.
After a stunning run in the first half of the season that saw them drop just seven points in nine matches, Toluca were stunned in the second half.
Their poor run in the league started right after their last gasp win over Cruz Azul in mid-August. Camilo Sanvezzo scored the winner in the 98th minute from the spot in a dramatic ending that saw the home side denied a penalty by VAR in the 113th minute.
Monterrey held them to a 1-1 draw, which was the start of their winless streak. Jhon Murillo scored the lone goal in the next match as Atletico de San Luis grabbed all three points at home against Toluca.
Pachuca were up next for Toluca, and they managed to score two goals in each half to secure a comfortable 4-1 win. A goalless draw with Guadalajara followed to stop it from becoming a hattrick of losses, but Tigres UANL made it three defeats in four for Toluca in the next match.
Draws with Pumas UNAM and Mazatlan were up next for Toluca before they finally ended the winless streak with a 4-1 win over Queretaro on the final day of the league phase.
Toluca do not have to look back long to find their last win over Juarez FC. They defeated their opponents 3-1 in the Apertura last year, with Nicolás Ibáñez, Rubens Sambueza, and Alexis Canelo finding the back of the net for the away side.
Martín Galván scored to make it 1-1 in the first half for Juarez, but they could not do much in the second half and had no reply to the two goals by Toluca.
This was their first and only win over Juarez in the league since the two started facing each other in 2019.
Juárez FC have finally made it to the playoffs of Apertura for the first time in their history. The side that was added to the league in 2019 had always finished outside the top 12, with 13th being their best finish when they managed 19 points in the 2020 edition.
After a bright start, things did not look good once again for Juarez, but two wins in the last five matches helped them grab a place at the very end.
Juarez FC went into the final day of the league season knowing that they had to win to make it to the playoffs on their own. They had managed just 16 points from as many matches so far and were up against Pumas UANL, who were out of the running for a playoff spot.
Jesús Dueñas calmed the nerves of the Juarez FC faithful with an early goal. He found the back of the net in the 4th minute of the match, and the players looked like they had got an extra dose of confidence.
However, things were in the balance once again as Diogo pulled one back for Pumas in the 33rd minute. Both teams looked set to go into the break level on terms, but Gabriel Fernández popped up with a goal to ensure the home side took the lead.
Both sides tried to get a goal in the second half but failed to make a difference on the scoresheet until the very end. Against the run of play, Alan Medina scored in the 96th minute to make it 3-1 for the home side and seal the playoff spot for Juarez FC.
Juárez FC finished at the rock bottom of the Clausura table earlier this year but still managed to be Toluca in the league. They seem to bring out their best whenever they face the side of Toluca de Lerdo.
They could not do much in keeping possession during the game and had to sit back and defend most of the time. However, Gabriel Fernández managed to score the lone goal of the match in the 95th minute to steal all three points. It was their solitary win in the last five games of the season, but it did not help them move away from the bottom place.
