There’s something to be said about momentum in Liga MX.
As is often the case, total points accumulated may not always determine who will be the favorite in a high-profile weekend battle.
And although Toluca will be hosting a Leon side that are behind them in the league table, Leon have looked more impressive in recent weeks.
In what should be an exciting playoff preview, Leon should be feeling confident against a Toluca roster that have dropped points left and right over the last couple of months.
Toluca also haven’t won a game in their last six appearances.
Leon have a great opportunity here.
Leon for the win. (+165)
What has happened to Toluca?
Once an early title candidate, they’ve stumbled since the end of the summer and are struggling to close out wins.
As mentioned earlier, they’re without a victory in their last six matches — and three of those were at home.
Fatigue could be playing a role here and so could the tactics of manager Hernan Cristante.
That said, there’s one massive factor that should be recognized…
At his best, attacking midfielder Rubens Sambueza is one of the most creative and decisive games in Liga MX.
The veteran is constantly able to create something out of nothing and is the main reason as to why they’re looking close to booking a spot in the playoffs.
Nonetheless, Sambueza isn’t the young player he once was.
Now at 37 years of age and soon to be 38, Toluca can’t afford to continue relying on him week after week.
Sambueza is a brilliant player but also one that can run out of energy quickly.
And when that happens, Toluca falter and don’t have too many other alternatives when it comes to chance creation.
Keep an eye on Angel Mena and Victor Davila.
Little by little, the two attacking players for Leon have started to pick up their pace right before a crucial period of time.
Looking at Mena, the winger/midfielder that tends to run towards the right has stepped up with more key passes and an assist on the 20th against Pumas.
As for Davila, the forward provided a goal in the result vs Pumas and also looked impressive in the latest 1-0 win over Puebla.
With these two steps up in the last couple of games for Leon, they could be heading towards another important set of three points.
Four wins one draw, and two losses away from home this season for Leon — not bad.
With only one loss in their last six away matches, Leon have been on an impressive run of form before they visit Toluca.
They are decent in the attack as well in those matches, with eight goals scored in seven games outside of home.
This means that if trends continue, we could see at least a goal from them this Sunday on Halloween.
