Best MLB Bets This Weekend September 23-24, 2023

The penultimate weekend of the Major League Baseball regular season is set to play out this weekend. That means some incredibly important games for the teams still standing in their respective postseason races. In our MLB best bets for Saturday and Sunday, we look at some of those important games and offer our best bets for them.

Colorado Rockies vs Chicago Cubs

  • Time: Saturday, September 23 at 2:20 PM ET
  • Starting Pitchers: Chris Flexen vs Marcus Stroman
  • Moneyline: Rockies (+190) | Cubs (-230)
  • Runline: Rockies +1.5 (EVEN) | Cubs  -1.5 (-120)
  • Total: Over 8.5 (-110) | Under 8.5 (-110)

My Pick: Over 8.5 (-110)

Our first best bet on the diamond for the weekend comes from Chicago, where the Colorado Rockies will visit the Chicago Cubs. In that game, the Cubs will welcome Marcus Stroman back to the mound, as he makes his triumphant return from injury. But we like both Stroman and his counterpart on the mound to struggle early in this game and for this contest to go over the 8.5-run total.

Stroman has had a very good season before going down due to injury. He posted a 10-8 record with a 3.76 ERA, and he was in the NL Cy Young discussion for a good chunk of the season before he was forced to miss some time. Here, look for Stroman to encounter a little rust from not being on the hill for an extended period of time, and for that to lead to more scoring than usual against him.

Meanwhile, the Cubs should be able to put up a decent amount of runs of their own against the likes of Rockies starter Chris Flexen. Flexen is just 1-8 on the year and has posted an ERA of 7.19 for the season. Look for his struggles to continue in this game as well, as the Cubs are hanging onto the third Wild Card spot in the National League and need to continue winning games.

Los Angeles Angels vs Minnesota Twins

My Pick: Angels Moneyline (+188)

One of our favorite MLB betting angles is back over the weekend, when the Los Angeles Angels take on the Minnesota Twins on Saturday afternoon. The Twins just clinched the AL Central title on Friday night by beating the Angels. But clinching their division will mean bad things in this game, as the Twins should come out flat against the Angels on Saturday afternoon, allowing the Angels to cash as an underdog.

The rationale is simple here, as the Twins were likely spraying drinks at each other in the locker room last night. After celebrating their accomplishment last night, they are not going to come out with the same energy and focus in a game that no longer means as much to their season. Look for the Angels to take advantage of that, even if the Angels are a very difficult sell in terms of a team to bet on without Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

Seattle Mariners vs Texas Rangers

  • Time: Sunday, September 24 at 2:35 PM ET
  • Starting Pitchers: Bryan Woo vs Nathan Eovaldi
  • Moneyline: Mariners (+102) | Rangers (-122)
  • Runline: Mariners +1.5 (-185) | Rangers -1.5 (+154)
  • Total: Over 9 (+102) | Under 9 (-122)

Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

My Pick: Rangers -1.5 (+154)

Last up on our list of MLB best bets for the weekend is a game of huge importance to both teams on Sunday. The Seattle Mariners are both in the race for the AL West title, as well as the AL Wild Card race, making their series this weekend a vital one. Look for the Rangers to pick up a win on Sunday, though, as they send one of the better pitchers in baseball this season to the mound to try and help their playoff chances.

Nathan Eovaldi is on the mound for the Rangers on Sunday, who enters that game with a record of 11-4 and an ERA of 3.05 on the season. With the Rangers entering this weekend with the slimmest of leads on the AL West, Eovaldi’s presence on the mound will be huge for his team. It will also be a huge negative for a Seattle team that is in a tight three-way battle for two AL Wild Card spots with the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros.
