This matchup features a ton of talented bets, but we expect a low-scoring slugfest to unfold tonight.
The Brewers will start Colin Rea (9-3, 3.59 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) tonight. The 34-year-old is having the best season of his career and shows no signs of slowing down. He has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts and will do so again tonight.
One drawback of betting on Rea is that he does not go deep into games, usually lasting less than six innings. However, the Milwaukee bullpen is finally complete with closer Devin Williams back from the IL. His presence gives the bullpen the depth it has been missing, allowing them to support Rea’s short but effective starts.
The Braves will have Chris Sale (13-3, 2.71 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) starting opposite Rea tonight. The 35-year-old has had a bounce-back season with Atlanta and has allowed more than two runs just once since April 19. The lefty’s last start came against the Brewers, allowing two runs across 5 2/3 innings.
Sale’s season numbers are enough reason to place this bet, but it's not the only reason. His numbers during night games have been surreal, going 9-1 with a 1.76 ERA.

Both teams have been an absolute mess since the All-Star break, but the Astros will have a significant advantage with Framber Valdez (10-5, 3.56 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) on the mound. The veteran ace has been steadily improving since June, posting an ERA of 3.04. The lefty has had mixed results against the Rangers in the past but has yet to face them this season.
Valdez is coming off a rough start, but the outing was as bad as the numbers show. A four-run second inning cost Valdez, but he was lights out in the other five he pitched. Despite the rough outing, he finished with a 2.90 in July, showing just how well he has been pitching of late.
Valdez will face a Rangers lineup that has been incredibly disappointing in 2024. They rank eighteenth in runs scored and nineteenth in batting average. While they still have a ton of talent, that hasn’t translated into runs this season.
The Rangers will have Tyler Mahle making his first start of the season. The righty is coming back from Tommy John surgery, which has limited him to just five games since 2022. That makes it hard to set expectations for how he will look in his return tonight, especially against a great Astros lineup.
Houston has had many issues this season, but its lineup has been consistently producing. It ranks third in batting average despite ranking thirteenth in runs scored. Given the state of the Rangers bullpen and the fact that Mahle will be on the pitch count, it seems we have all the ingredients for an Astros win tonight.
