Best MLB Player Props August 16 2023

Wednesday’s Major League Baseball slate features several games that are significant to the playoff races around the league. From Wild Card contenders to division leaders looking to move closer to clinching, our MLB prop bets for today feature several of those matchups featuring contenders to play in October.

Cleveland Guardians vs Cincinnati Reds

My Pick: Andrew Abbott to record the win (+135 at PointsBet)

The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians will face off in the battle of Ohio on Wednesday night. Cincinnati goes into that game as the favorite at home, as they are fighting in the NL Central and Wild Card races. We expect Cincinnati to win at home, and for starting pitcher Andrew Abbot to record the win in the game, which comes at a plus price over at PointsBet going into this matchup.

The main angle we are looking at here is the fact that the Reds are taking on Noah Syndergaard of the Guardians in this contest. Syndergaard has really struggled throughout the season for the Dodgers and then the Guardians after he was traded. In either case, he should give up some early runs in this contest as he has done all season, which will work in the favor of the Reds and Abbott in particular.

Abbott this season has a record of 7-3 to go with an ERA of 2.95 and has been a big reason for the Reds competing in the NL Central this season. Even if he is not at his best, he should be able to slow down an anemic Guardians offense. As long as he can outlast the struggling Syndergaard, he should be in line for the win once the bullpens get involved.

Baltimore Orioles vs San Diego Padres

My Pick: Baltimore Orioles under 3.5 runs (-122 at FanDuel)

The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the best offensive teams in baseball this season. That has been a reason for the Orioles taking the lead in the AL East this season and becoming one of the best stories in baseball, broadcaster-related suspensions notwithstanding. On Wednesday, though, expect the Orioles to fail to score four runs, as they take on a red-hot Blake Snell of the San Diego Padres.

Snell is one of the top favorites for the NL Cy Young Award here in the middle of August. He is 9-8 this season, but it is his league-leading 2.63 ERA on the season that has been the attention grabber for Snell this season. Look for him to remain red hot in this start, even if he is taking on a Baltimore team that has been in the top 10 in the league in runs scored for much of this 2023 campaign.

It is interesting to note that Snell’s statistics have not been much different at home, outside of his win tally. Snell’s ERA is slightly higher at home than it is on the road, but he is 7-3 at home and just 2-4 on the road. Expect Snell to continue to hold opponents in check, but to get another win at home by keeping the Orioles under the four-run mark.

Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers

My Pick: Freddie Freeman over 1.5 hits (+170 at DraftKings)

The final MLB prop bet on our radar for Wednesday is for Freddie Freeman to rack up two or more hits against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers have more or less run away with the NL West at this point in the season, as they have won nine games in a row to take a nine-game lead. But Freeman will not rest on his laurels here, as the Dodgers are still playing to compete for home-field advantage in the National League.

Freeman is also still in the mix to lead MLB in hits for this season, as he is in that race with Luis Arraez, Ronald Acuna Jr., and the injured Bo Bichette. At home, he should have another big game in the hit department to not only help his team win but to help his chances of finishing this year with the most hits in baseball. He faces a pitcher in Wade Miley for the Brewers who is certainly not bad but can be hit by a potent lineup like that of Los Angeles.
