Washington Nationals vs New York Mets
My Pick: Max Scherzer to record the win (+135 at PointsBet)
The New York Mets are coming off of a game where they barely squeaked by the Washington Nationals, beating them 2-1. On Friday, they send Max Scherzer to the mound against the Nats, and they should have the edge over Washington from the start of that matchup. As a result, we like Scherzer to pick up the win at a plus price to kick off our MLB prop betting for the Friday schedule.
Scherzer is 8-4 so far this season with a 4.20 ERA, while striking out over a batter per inning so far in 2023. He pitched five innings against the Nationals in his first start against them this season, and he did not allow a run in that outing. He may not shut the Nats out completely in this game, but he should put his team in a position to win this game, and get the winning decision along the way.
The Mets should also be able to give Scherzer some run support against Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore. Gore has a losing record on the season, posting a 4.37 ERA on the year. He is also vulnerable to the home run ball, having given up 16 long balls on the season, which will leave him vulnerable against a Mets team that has some power bats in their lineup.
Tampa Bay Rays vs Houston Astros
My Pick: Cristian Javier over 5.5 strikeouts (-135 at DraftKings)

The best matchup on the MLB schedule for Friday is between the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros. Both teams look like they will be in the postseason this year, and both teams have legitimate chances to win the American League pennant. In this game, we get a great pitching matchup, as Cristian Javier faces Shane McClanahan, and Javier should strike out at least six members of the Rays.
Javier has struck out six or more batters in six of his starts so far this season, which is not the majority of his outings. However, he faces a Rays team that has not been great on the road in the 2023 campaign. Tampa is just 25-24 on the road so far this year, which is incredibly mediocre, and Javier will take full advantage of the mediocrity of the Rays away from St. Petersberg on Friday night.
New York Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles
My Pick: Orioles over 4 runs (EVEN at FanDuel)

A huge AL East matchup is set to unfold on Friday night, as the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles start a massive series that will impact both ends of the division standings. The Yankees need to pick up some wins to work their way toward the Wild Card chase. Meanwhile, the Orioles need to keep winning to ward off the Tampa Bay Rays at the top of the standings in what has been the most competitive division in baseball from top to bottom.
Here, we like the Orioles to go over their team total of four runs, which comes at even money at FanDuel Sportsbook. The Orioles have a tough task ahead of them offensively in this game, as they have to face AL Cy Young frontrunner Gerrit Cole of the Yankees. But the Orioles have been incredible at home so far this season, and they deserve a little more credit in the marketplace than they are currently getting.
Cole gave up five runs to the Orioles in his lone start against them earlier this season, in a game the Yankees ended up winning by a margin of 6-5 in 10 innings. No matter who wins this game, Baltimore should have enough success against Cole once again in order to be in a position to score five total runs again here. With the way Baltimore has been playing, entering this contest at 30-20 at home, there is no reason to count them out to hurt Cole’s ERA again.
