Our first NRFI bet features two teams that are struggling at the plate. The Minnesota Twins rank seventeenth in the league in batting average (.240), while the Blue Jays are even worse at twenty-second (.228). That alone makes this a solid NRFI bet, but the game also features a pair of impressive starting pitchers.
The Twins will have rookie Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 1.74 ERA) on the mound to start this one. The 23-year-old has been magnificent across four starts this season and is coming off his best effort. On Monday, Richardson held the Mariners scoreless while allowing just one hit and one walk across six innings. The Twins have some talented bats, but it will take them some time to adjust to the red-hot rookie.
Toronto will have their ace on the mound tonight in Kevin Gausman (2-3, 3.78 ERA). The veteran’s ERA is boosted by a pair of tough outings to kick off April, but he has turned things around since. Over his last four starts, Gausman has allowed just two runs over 25 innings (0.72 ERA).
This matchup between AL rivals features one of the better pitching matchups of the day as an up-and-coming Cole Ragans (2-2, 3.38 ERA) squares off against veteran Tyler Anderson (2-4, 2.74 ERA). While Anderson will have more of a challenge as he faces a Royals team with Bobby Witt Jr., we think both pitchers will cruise through the first.
Cole Ragans was squired by Kansas City via trade last season and was incredible. That momentum has carried into 2024, where his ERA is driven up by one bad outing against a great Orioles team. Ragans bounced back immediately after that ugly start, allowing four combined runs across 17 ⅔ innings (2.09 ERA). Considering he is facing an Angels team struggling to score runs without Mike Trout, we see another great start from Ragans tonight.
The Angels will turn to Tyler Anderson to start against an impressive Royals lineup. The 34-year-old has bounced back in 2024 but is coming off his worst start. While he may be falling back down to Earth a bit, Anderson has only allowed a first-inning run in one of his seven starts this season. We see him adding to that impressive total today, though things may get ugly afterward.
