The hottest team in baseball entering Thursday night is the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won 10 straight games. That includes two straight wins over the Milwaukee Brewers in their current series, which concludes with this matchup. Here, the Brewers will look to end the winning streak of the Dodgers and help their chances in the NL Central race, as they send their ace to the mound to try and grab one game in LA.
The Milwaukee Brewers enter Thursday night on a two-game losing streak, having dropped the first two games of this series to the Dodgers. They are up by 2.5 games over the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds at the top of the NL Central. With such a slim lead, their margin for error is small, and they will look to ace pitcher Corbin Burnes to stop the bleeding and get them back into the win column here.
Burnes is 9-6 this season but has a much more impressive ERA, which sits at 3.60 coming into this contest. Burnes had given up two or fewer earned runs in seven straight starts before his last outing, where he allowed five earned runs to a below-average Chicago White Sox team on the road. Here, Burnes will not be able to afford such issues, as the Dodgers have the kind of lineup that can jump all over a pitcher who does not bring his best stuff to the ballpark.
Along with Burnes’ potential to struggle, there are questions about the production of the Milwaukee offense heading into this series finale with the Dodgers. The Brewers have scored just three runs in this series. That is clearly not good enough against as potent an offensive club as Los Angeles, and Milwaukee will need to do more damage at the plate if they want to pick up a much-needed victory.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have won 10 straight games, which has helped them all but run away with the NL West. They lead second-place San Francisco by 10 games in the division standings and will look to extend that lead with a win over the Brewers to complete a three-game sweep. For that to happen, Dodgers starter Lance Lynn is going to need to pitch at a high level to outperform the aforementioned Burnes.
Lynn has had his ups and downs this season, posting a record of 9-9 with a 5.88 ERA going into Thursday’s game. Since joining the Dodgers, though, he has done a nice job of turning things around. Lynn has allowed just four earned runs in 18 innings of action since going to Los Angeles from Chicago, and another solid start from him could help the Dodgers claim an 11th straight victory.
Also working in Los Angeles’ favor is the fact that their offense has been red-hot during the team’s 10-game win streak. The Dodgers have scored five or more runs in seven of their last 10 games, with the exceptions to that trend coming against Rockies and Diamondbacks teams that could not score enough for it to make a difference. If there is a team that can send Burnes off the rails on Thursday, it is this one, though that is still easier said than done.
