Both these sides are looking for a little run of form but that’s been hard to come by. San Jose Earthquakes haven’t got a win in six matches and Inter Miami haven’t had a win in their last two.
Inter Miami also played a friendly against Barcelona in between that they lost 6-0, which wouldn’t have helped their morale. The two sides haven’t faced each other before, which makes this a fascinating match up. San Jose have home got advantage, which is why they head into this match as favorites but not by much.
This is the first meeting between the two sides.
FC Dallas have recovered from their blip but are still far from convincing despite sitting in third place on the Western conference table. San Jose Earthquakes, on the other hand, will already have one eye on next season with the likelihood of making the playoffs very unlikely now.
The two sides have faced each other 32 times with most of the ties ending in draws. They’ve had 15 stale mates but FC Dallas have the superior record with 10 wins to San Jose Earthquakes’ 7. The head to head and recent form clearly make FC Dallas the favorites heading into this match.
Based on the previous section, it’s no surprise that their last meeting was also a draw with the game ending 1-1. This meeting was a while back, taking place in November 2021. San Jose were by far the better side on the day, taking a ridiculous 26 shots to FC Dallas’ 6. They also had 59% of the possession and will have considered themselves extremely unfortunate to not come out with the win.
Chris Wondolowski opened the scoring for the Earthquakes in the 32nd minute before Jader Obrian leveled 10 minutes later. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Earthquakes with FC Dallas committing 21 fouls to take the sting out of the game. We’re unlikely to see this game played out in the same manner.
They look good enough for a playoff spot now, which wasn’t the case a month back but FC Dallas will be a bit disappointed after the draw against the Portland Timbers. They needed an own goal to level the scores in a 1-1 draw. This came following a loss to the Seattle Sounders in the previous game week.
FC Dallas need to make sure they don’t go on another poor run. They’ve been up and down all season and will be a bit disappointed that they haven’t done more to capitalize on the start they made to this season.
FC Dallas ended their poor run after beating the LA Galaxy 1-0 towards the end of last month. They hadn’t won at home since beating the Seattle Sounders on May 7, 2022. Despite ending that home hoodoo, they’ve been far from convincing in their performances. Winning at home and imposing your game on the opposition is always a sign of a team that’s on the up. The worry is that their place in the top half of the table won’t be there for long if they still have frailties that are exposed in home games.
San Jose Earthquakes don’t have a lot to play for at the moment but will be confident that they’re good enough to expose that.
Jesus Ferreira hasn’t found the back of the net in the last three games and without him taking up most of the goalscoring burden, FC Dallas look a bit toothless in attack.
He has scored 12 goals so far and also chipped in five assists. The 21- year-old has been one of the players of this MLS season and has overperformed on his underlying numbers. His expected goals value is 9.6 at the moment. He was always going to have a few dry runs. What’s been just as impressive as his goalscoring is his work off the ball. He has applied 20.93 pressures per game in the last 365 days, which is quite high and shows he’s the ultimate team player. With a little support around him, FC Dallas have the potential to become a fantastic side.
No injuries or suspensions.
Despite being towards the lower half of the table, the Earthquakes showed some spirit in their 3-3 draw against Austin FC, who are in the upper half of the Western conference table. The in-form Jeremy Ebobisse scored a late goal to even the score.
At the moment, it doesn’t look like San Jose Earthquakes are going to make the playoffs, having only managed 24 points so far, which sees them as the 13th placed team on the Western conference table. They’ll need to go on a ridiculous run of wins to stand a chance of qualification. Playing a decent FC Dallas outfit next won’t help either.
Even in a 3-3 draw, their flaws showed up. Scoring three goals is great but conceding 3 has been their issue all season. No team has conceded more than their 49 goals this season. Their expected goals against is at 45.6 suggests that they haven’t been unlucky either. They’re just very open and only Toronto FC have worse underlying numbers on that front.
No team can make any real challenge in the league when the defense is so poor. This can’t just be down to the goalkeeper or defenders. The entire team has to take some responsibility for the poor defensive record. Even some of the forwards, who have shone this season, could do more out of possession.
Jeremy Ebobisse has been as good as any player going forward this season. He has scored an incredible 13 goals with an expected goal value 11.7. Those underlying numbers show that this is no fluke and he’s the real deal. They have to wrap him up in cotton wool and make sure that they retain his services for the coming seasons. That’s the sort of talent that’s good enough to be a part of title winning sides.
One thing that can’t be denied about this San Jose Earthquakes side is that they’re entertaining. They’ve scored 39 goals this season, which is far more than many of the sides higher than them in the table. All they need to do is make a few defensive signings and get the team to work in a more organized manner out of possession. This will also help the strong attack that they’ve inherited.
Defensive midfielder George Asomani has been out since February with a hip injury. There’s no expected return date for the time being.
