New York City vs New England Prediction

Historically, only four matches between New York City FC and New England Revolution have ended in a draw, but this weekend it could be another one. Both sides are not at their best and are unable to convert the draws into wins. They have been held to draws in three of their last four matches and could end up canceling each other out on all parts of the pitch.

This fixture usually involves at least 2 goals per game, and only two of the last ten meetings have seen one or fewer goals. Goals are expected this weekend as well, and from both sides.

Previous Meetings

The two sides met back in May as well, but on that occasion it was in the US Open Cup. Both sides failed to score in the 90 minutes and took the game to extra time, where Santiago Rodríguez scored the lone goal of the match.  New York City FC edged a win after dominating the game. They had 64 percent of the ball, 15 shots with seven on target, but only one big chance in the 120 minutes.

The last time they faced each other in MLS, the game went into extra time and penalty shootout too. They had met at the end of November 2021 in the knockout stages, and the game finished 1-1 in regulation time, with both goals coming in the first nine minutes of the match.

After 120 minutes, the game ended 2-2, with Valentin Castellanos scoring for New York City in the 109th minute before getting sent off four minutes later. Tajon Buchanan equalized with two minutes left on the clock, but he just delayed his side getting knocked out as they lost in the penalty shootout a few minutes later. NYCFC converted all their penalties, while New England’s Adam Buksa had his penalty saved by Sean Johnsen.

New York City FC’s Form Has Dropped and They Need to Bounce Back

New York City FC started their MLS season in shocking style, with three losses in their first five matches. They lost to LA Galaxy, Philadelphia Union, and Toronto FC and were held to a goalless draw by Vancouver Whitecaps in the other game.

Their only win in the first five matches was against CF Montreal, and it came right after their 3-1 win over Comunicaciones in the CONCACAF Champions League.  Since then, they have picked up form and lost just once in the league. Their unbeaten run started right after they were knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League by the Seattle Sounders.

An Impressive Unbeaten Run Followed by a Concerning Fall

They kicked off in style with a 6-0 thrashing of Real Salt Lake, and followed it up with a 5-4 win over Toronto FC, before making it a hat-trick of wins by beating San Jose Earthquakes 3-0. They couldn’t keep up this perfection, however, going on to draw against Sporting Kansas City. As if they took that personally, they then went on to win a whopping four times in a row. They defeated Columbus Crew, DC United, Chicago Fire and Minnesota United, before being held to a draw by the Colorado Rapids.

The draw has seen their form drop since and they lost to Philadelphia Union. They went on to draw against FC Cincinnati and Atlanta United in the next two matches and could not get the three points despite scoring six times in those two games. To make things worse, the New York Red Bulls knocked them out of the US Open Cup as well. The Red Bulls defeated them 3-0 with goals from Lewis Morgan, Luquinhas, and Omir Fernandez in the second half, after the match stayed goalless in the first half.

Desperately Need Consistency

The issue with NYCFC this season is that their form has been biased towards the extremes. They started on a poor note with three losses in the first five matches, and then went on a brilliant unbeaten run. They’ve now gone five matches with no wins and need to rapidly find a middle ground, lest their title prospects fall apart.

Injuries and Suspensions

Thiago Martins is ruled out.

New England Revolution Are on an Unbeaten Run in the League, but Need More Wins

New England Revolution are on an unbeaten run right now, but they are not able to get the wins they need. They have not lost in any of their last ten matches, but they have picked up just four wins in those games.

They kicked off the season with a draw at Portland Timbers, before winning against FC Dallas in their first home match. But their focus shifted to the CONCACAF Champions League and that saw them losing four matches in the league. They were knocked out of the Champions League as well, and Bruce Arena had the challenge to get his players back in the right mindspace again.

The Bounce Back

They ended their losing streak in the league with a win over newcomers Charlotte FC, but were beaten by DC United in the next game week. Incidentally, that was their last loss in the league, and they have been on a ten-match unbeaten run since then. The run began with a 2-0 win over Inter Miami, followed by a draw against Columbus Crew.

Since then, they have drawn against Atlanta United, Philadelphia Union, Orlando City FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, and FC Cincinnati (at home). Their only wins have come against Minnesota United, Sporting Kansas City and FC Cincinnati (away). Arena’s men have been doing well to keep the opponents at bay and have been conceding rarely over the course of these matches. However, the weakness is in attack, where they are unable to score from the chances created.

Tough to Change Speeds Against New York City FC

They are up against New York City FC this weekend, and things are very likely to continue. The last time they defeated NYCFC away from home was back in 2021, when Tommy McNamara scored a late winner.

While they were on an unbeaten run in the league, they were knocked out of the US Open Cup. The loss was at the hands of New York City FC, and this match will carry a bit of an edge in that regard. Santiago Rodríguez scored the lone goal of the match, but the performance of Bruce Arena’s men was below par. They had just 36 percent of the ball and took just eight shots in the game, while their opponents had twice as well.  They also completed only 73 percent of their passes and gave away the ball cheaply.

Injuries and Suspensions

Matt Polster is ruled out.
