UTA: Leave It All on the Court

The Utah Jazz have their backs against the wall in hostile territory. While they have the talent to force a Game 7, they need to force the issue.

By forcing the issue, we’re suggesting that the Utah Jazz not fall into the Clippers’ trap and settle on shooting threes. Utah hit 20 three-point field goals in Game 5, but through attempting 54 total threes.

There is no game for the Jazz if they lose this, so they need to be aggressive. Playing to their strengths, the inside-out game, and not falling into the Clippers’ defensive scheme will force a Game 7.

Jazz Key Player: (G) Donovan Mitchell

One of his poorer performances in the 2021 NBA Playoffs, Mitchell wasn’t at peak effectiveness in Game 5. To force a Game 7, Utah need Mitchell to be the incredible scorer that he is.

Mitchell posted a solid but inefficient 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists in 38 minutes of play. He shot just 6 of 19 from the field and was 4 of 14 from three-point range. For the Jazz to succeed, he needs to get to the rim.

The Jazz All-Star is at his best when he is going downhill, attacking the basket, and creating for others when needed. The Clippers slowed his pace in the last game, so how he adjusts will determine Utah’s chances.

LAC: Prop Up the Supporting Cast

The LA Clippers now enter the game with just one star available to them with Kawhi Leonard out with injury. As they did in Game 5, the Clippers supporting cast needs to step up.

In their last game, the Clippers had an uncommon four double-digit scorers in light of Leonard’s absence. While George led the way, it was Marcus Morris, Reggie Jackson, and Terance Mann who combined for 60 of the Clippers’ 119 points on the evening.

George will be the focus of the Jazz defence, so whoever joins him on the court needs to reward him with shot-making and efficiency. They have little margin for error, but Game 5 was a great sign for their future success.

Clippers Key Player: (G-F) Paul George

With Kawhi Leonard suffering what seemed to be a season-ending injury, Paul George stepped up in hopes of rallying his team to success. He did so, putting the Clippers one game away from the Western Conference Finals.

In Game 5 against the Jazz, George posted 37 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks on 12 of 22 shooting from the field.

George is a game-changer but doesn’t have the history of being successful in clutch playoff situations. With his performance in Game 5, George has everyone thinking he can carry the Clippers to the next round.
