Where: Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, OR
When: Thursday, February 7th at 10:00 PM EST
How (TV): Pac-12 Network
Head Coach: Jerod Haase {Overall: 11-10 .524 W-L% | Conference: 4-5, 8th in Pac-12}
The Stanford Cardinal do not sit high in the Pac-12. Seeing as the remainder of their schedule pits them against the Pac-12, they have the opportunity to regain some consistency while climbing the rankings of their conference.
The Cardinal are coming off of back to back wins against Pac-12 competition. Wins over Colorado and California on the road are great statements as they continue their road trip into the state of Oregon.
Oregon State are a strong defensive team – eleventh in nation in both defensive rebounding and blocks. The Cardinal are top in terms of three-point attempts per game, but only convert at a rate of 34%. If Stanford can’t find their range early, they’ll have a tough night against the Beavers.
Head Coach: Wayne Tinkle {Overall: 14-7 .667 W-L% | Conference: 6-3, 2nd in Pac-12 }
The Oregon State Beavers, currently ranked second in the Pac-12, are trending positively in their conference. After a two-game losing streak in Arizona, the Beavers bounced back to win three of their last four.
Most recently the Beavers won back to back road games against Colorado and Utah. The match against Colorado was a nail-biter, winning by a mere two points by the end of the second half. In that game Stephen Thompson Jr and Tres Tinkle were dominant all over the offensive end. Combining for 40 points, 7 assists, and 14 rebounds – not bad for your guard-forward duo.
Stanford is going to spray as many threes as possible against the Beavers. With the likes of Tinkle and Kelly on the inside, Oregon has too much size for the Cardinal to compete with in the paint. The Beavers should be comfortable running the Cardinal off the line, and into the waiting hands of their interior defenders.
The Stanford Cardinal have no injuries to report.
F Payton Dastrup – 25 Oct 2018 – (Waiver) will not play in the 2018 season as his waiver for immediate eligibility and subsequent appeal were denied by the NCAA.
Kezie Okpala
Forward | 6-9, 215lb (206cm, 97kg) | Esperanza High School | Orange County, CA | Sophomore
18.3 PPG | 2.3 APG | 6.1 RPG | 1.0 SPG | 0.7 BPG | 2.9 TOV | .494 FG% | .419 3P%
Tres Tinkle
Forward | 6-8, 225lb (203cm, 102kg) | Hellgate HS | Missoula, MT | Senior
20.8 PPG | 4.1 APG | 8.1 RPG | 1.7 SPG | 0.7 BPG | 3.1 TOV | .485 FG% | .312 3P%
It will be a matchup of scoring forwards when Stanford’s Kezie Okpala and Oregon State’s Tres Tinkle finally face off. Both are comfortable getting to the basket and scoring inside, as well as firing from range. Their offensive production will likely dictate the success of their respective teams.
Kezie Okpala is an athletic forward who really shines when he is attacking the basket. While his shooting was a concern as a freshman, Okpala has improved his three-point shooting ability. Once converting on only 23% of threes on 1.3 attempts per game as a freshman, Okpala is now shooting an impressive 42% from three on almost three times as many attempts per game as a sophomore. The diversity in Okpala’s game will give Stanford a chance against the Beavers’ inside presence.
Tres Tinkle is a talented scoring small forward with a diverse offensive skill set. Averaging 20.8 points per game is impressive for Tinkle, but the means by which he gets his points is commendable. A force on the boards on both ends, Tinkle is able to push the ball alone as well as get up for second-chance opportunities. While his shooting and quickness limits him, Tinkle’s ability to drive the ball and make the correct shot or pass is an asset to the Beavers.
The odds makers have the Oregon State Beavers favoured over the Stanford Cardinal by 7.5, with an over/under of 110.
