This year’s Super Bowl features two of the league’s most storied franchises. The Niners and Chiefs have several Super Bowl trophies decorating their halls, and they will be battling to add another on Sunday.
While the Niners looked to be the best team in football all season, that hasn’t been the case in the playoffs. They needed second-half comebacks to beat the Packers and Lions as their defense struggled to make stops. They allowed a combined 52 points in those two games, but their offense was able to do enough to get the win.
There are a lot of playmakers on this team, but none will be more critical than Brock Purdy. The young quarterback finished fifth in the league in passing yards (4,280) and third in touchdowns (31). He has fit well into Kyle Shannahan’s system but hasn’t looked the same in the team’s two playoff games. Purdy struggled to get clean passes off when pressure was applied, resulting in punts and turnovers that kept both games close. He’ll face a great Chiefs pass rush this weekend, and the game will likely be decided based on how the quarterback responds.
The Chiefs enter the Super Bowl looking to defend their title from last season. While a disappointing regular season had many people doubting this Kansas City team, they have looked far better in the playoffs. They blew out Miami in the Wild Card Round and got impressive road wins against the Bills and Ravens. That means this team is battle-tested, which is bad news for a Niners team that had a much easier path.
The Chiefs' defense is one of the best in the league, but their offense was a different story. One reason is their wide receivers, who were awful for much of the season. Their struggles have allowed defenses to key in on Travis Kelce, stifling the offense. Rookie receiver Rashee Rice has emerged as a reliable target for Mahomes, and it helped spark this offense. However, relying on a rookie to be your top receiver in the league’s biggest game is risky. If Rice struggles, it will be tough for Kansas City to get the win.
